BG it is so nice to see these colorful pictures in the midst of winter! Thank you for sharing. I LOVE that pic of the Admiral - so gorgeous! The Tigers use Cottonwood here in OKC. There is a big tree behind the house and I see them often in the backyard near that tree. I think they will also use Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) among other trees such as Wild Cherry (Prunus serotina) which the RSPs use as well. I just planted a very small...

Thank you both for the compliments! The eggs and young caterpillars are indeed small. Those are alfalfa flower buds in the picture of the egg, and the little bit of purple showing on the one bud might give you an idea of how big it is. The eggs are quite a beautiful color when you look at them; it's really too bad that this didn't come out in the picture. Larry Gene- Yes, I was thinking you might want better confirmation on the...

The somewhat fanciful description from your childhood may be difficult to match up with a moth photo. Some candidates that are either large/white/orange/green: Rosy Maple moth (white form) Acrea moth Honey Locust moth certain buck moths greasewood moth virginia creeper sphinx leafy spurge hawk moth haploa lecontei You will get the most moths for a quick computer search by starting with the Moth Photographer's Group, there are links to...

Sus, Oh but I've always thought that you had a lot of enthusiasm, so I don't think I have you beat there. You're nice to say that though. ;) I know what you mean about biting off more than you can chew. I do that a lot. Well, most of the time actually. I have projects galore that are sitting around waiting to get done. That's great that you're getting into birding too. I've been into that for probably close to 25...

Thank you all for your help. It was along time ago I'm probably not remembering correctly. It probably doesn't help that I dream in color. I will ask my sister over the holidays, maybe she'll have a more accurate recollection than I. The only other thing I can remember was the caterpillar was fat and green.

I think in May when there are new leaves for them to munch on--they're so cute (but only we would think so!) This pic is a little blurry, but it gives you an idea about how well the cat can blend in with the stem: I can't remember what this cat turned into--a White Admiral, RSP, or Viceroy: Couple adults (I miss posting pics here so just have to share):

You may have had some kind of infestation in your pantry. It happened to me a while back. I opened up the door of the pantry and one flew out. Few days later, happened again. Check your grain products and look for bugs. I feel pretty sure that's your problem.

Luna? No. But if it is staghorn sumac, regals like it. I sure wish I could get my staghorn to start prospering. Darn deer keep chewing it back. 2 feet seems to be as high as mine will ever go. I bought a 4 foot one this year but the 4 foot part never did a thing while a new tree started from the base, only to become deer food sometime during the summer :( One of my tiger eyes got its ...

GHs use a wide variety of host plants. It's almost like listing host plants for a generalist moth and a neverending story. I am not opposed to listing additional host plants for the GH, but just pointing out that it will be an extensive compilation of host plants because the GH is not too specific. The Dallas County Lep Society lists numerous hosts, as follows: "EUPHORBIACEAE: Woolly ...

Check out the Luna Moth. It sounds the closest to what you are describing. I've included a link and if you scan down the pictures, you will see a rather light Luna. Good luck on your garden. Include a Buttonbush. I found Cecropia caterpillars on mine this year--never saw the moth. I'm hoping the moths will eclose from the cocoons next spring. Here is a link that might be useful: Luna ...

I got mine at Walmart. When the butterflies are eclosing, I put a hand towel over the top to act as a lid. It's my understanding that you can order from Walmart and they will deliver to your local store without charging you for shipping. The hampers with lids cost quite a bit more. HTH, Sandy

Good question, I'd been wondering that myself. But here's what I've noticed. I have a few outside that pupated maybe late October/November. One day I was out there misting plants and one of them wiggled like crazy from the mist, but only that one. Well none of the others wiggled from the mist and that one is the only one that has eclosed. So I hope it does not happen for yours but just my ...
