Bringing a horse out of rehab...

Learned something new about Moe yesterday: he turns into a total bull when you trail ride him with other horses! I was totally shocked how nasty he was. He head flicked like crazy, bolted and kept plunging into a jig. He started to calm down 2/3s the way through the ride. I kept looking for a time to relax and give to him, but they were far in between. No wonder why his owner said he's horrible out on trails! And here I thought he was...

Not a lot new just yet, the past couple of days has brought us out of the arctic weather and back to a balmy 40 degrees. Here is a good picture of the yard glacier but not the best picture of Salsa and his little drafty shadow. She has been using Salsa as her personal windbreak & heater the past two weeks and he seems to enjoy her company.

Can't wait. When we had colts, we got them used to being handled starting with scratching their itchy spots...particularly above their tails, to get them to associate good things with rear approach, their withers, under their bellies, between their titties (sorry, don't know how else to word it) and sheaths. And there would always come a point when we'd have 6 month old colts running backwards towards us for butt itching. Kinda...

^ You make is sound so pretty, but I know the truth! I agree, it is pretty...if you're at home inside with a fire.

Believe it or not, I just wrapped the pipes out in the pasture today and broke the ice on the horses' water. Cupcake said this is not the California she signed up for!

happyhorse wrote: The easiest way to remove ice balls is to pick up the foot and take something (a file, hammer, etc....) and tap all the way around the hoof wall. You may have to make two rounds, but the ice and snow will pop right out whole. thanks for the tip, I'll try that!

I watched the video again just to make sure I wasn't crazy... Yea, she looks off in the rear end to me. Can't turn the sound on because I'm school, using a school computer... in the library... no no. Anyways, you have a consistently lame horse, SM, what do you think? You didn't see it?

Wow, I feel guilty, I have been complaining about 30 degrees and 2" of snow over the weekend. Lovely photos as usual, Thanks!

Wow, look at the platform heels! Yikes...amazing they're still agile with all that snow packed in there. Salsa looks like he has a wicked nice trot. And I'm envious of your hay bales!

Well, since the last post the fillies have indeed "been curried below their knees." The trainer reports that she can work with them in the field and can groom them all over their bodies. Yay! I visited them Saturday and Sunday evenings and tried to get photos of them trotting for a potential adopter. Counld not get them to trot. They stood near and when I clapped, clucked, waved my hands or otherwise tried to get them to trot...

Salsa is a 3 y/o gelding mule who is already over 16hh. He is not here yet due to snow delays but hopefully we will be able to get him here soon. He had a
rough young life, dumped at an auction in emaciated condition then taken to a rescue where he was adopted by some really wonderful folks who were not expecting
such a young mule. He has a habit of putting his feet through the fence and is ...

I sure was happy last night that I decided to put pdj's nose piece on Moe the other day. I originally put it on there because he seemed uncertain of the
bit and even a tad dull to it. And last night, I actually engaged the nose piece for the first time because Moe got a little naughty.
It was dusk when we started our session and it was only the second time I've ridden him the dark. This time ...

Saw the babies at their foster home. A woman very kindly offered to foster them at her barn, so the babies are receiving excellent care. Here they are out on
the hillside near the barn. I was able to walk up to them in the field and pet them on the head and neck.

Damn- thats one shiny mule! I looked at the pictures before reading your entry and the first thing I thought about Mister was how nice his hoof looks!
My second thought was that if you had a side view of Mister at the same moment in time, he would probably look great with an arched neck, nose tucked in,
really working well, they are very handsome!
