Generally, with whitetail we get 50-70% of the "dressed" weight in meat. I shot a 118# doe this year (which is big), and we got about 75# back from the processor. Usually we do our own and we don't bother with the ribs, and we debone them. When we do that it's...

I don't really think I could put a price on that. An argument could be made that you could have that "therapy" for free. After all, unless killing something is the "therapy" then being outside in...

I would not have reviewed the pictures. If you just reported it, then you wouldn't know who you were reporting, and therefore could not be held accountable for it. You have reason to expect more from you superior officers, so in your mind you should have been reporting a "lesser" person...except that you reviewed the pictures. And they tend to stick together, thinking of themselves as somehoe "better",...

I usually agree with Daryl, and do again, but what he didn't mention is how a good dose of #4 buckshot from your trusty 12 gauge is hard to beat if you have heavy cover to hunt in. You need to keep your shots well within 50 yards, (30 or 40 is better) but that's a long way in heavy cover. As a matter of fact, it's often good to sit in a place where you CAN'T see more than 30 yards or so. Then the coyotes you see will be...

Wyo Hog Hunt
Published (2009-12-02 03:36:00)
Dang gosh craziest hog huntin' I have ever seen are the video's on YOuTube titled "hog wars" where they bang away from a helo. Man, that could be a great retirement gift. I am hunting hogs on public land and having a heck of a time catching up to 'em. Stalking. NO big numbers, but the WMA's in the area have a few and the managers are trying hard not to let them get out of hand. Had no idea they ranged as...

It varies widely from state to state. When I lived in CA, any LEO could verify your tag, including CA DFG, the CHP, local deputy sheriffs you could find just about anywhere, or the game processors could do it. When I lived in NV, checking your tag was not required, but there were often NV Dept of Wildlife checkstations in "trophy management" areas. When I lived in ID, no check stations, just take the deer to the processor. In...

Here in Florida, if you're hunting on state land, you weigh your deer in at the check station and take off.

Where do you live in CA? When I lived in CA, there were lots of ground squirrels to be found. I mean lots . I burned out the barrel on my first 22-250 shooting ground squirrels all over CA from Mendocino to San Luis Obispo to Fresno. Ranchers that wouldn't even talk to you about shooting coyotes or hunting on their land would line up to talk to us about taking out a couple hundred ground ...

Congrats on your deer. I always enjoy it when someone else uses a single shot. Rifle or shotgun. One year I killed 3 deer with my old Savage 219 in 30-30 and one with the Savage 220 in 16 ga. Gotta love those break open guns. Jim

I observed the Austrian custom of placing a green twig or plant in animal's mouth as the "Last bite" and toasting the animal with schnapps. I thought it showed the correct reverence and respect.

I would have killed it, anybody that would watch an animal suffer like that should be ashamed.

That's a good example of what's wrong with our country today. It used to be that those in higher office were held to a higher standard. Now, a higher office buys you more acceptable levels of corruption. It pathetic.

I don't have that problem. Every time I see a nice rifle, I can't afford it. It helps that I have Corvette taste and a Chevette wallet.

Bow, I pay 17.50 for a license and the ammo is up to a staggering 15 bucks for 20 . 30-30 or 11 bucks for 15 slugs. To hunt the WMA I need a 50 dollar pass. So to start a season from nothing, I am gonna be right at 100 bucks with gas. I figure I MUST shoot 2 deer at 130 hoof weight each to make sure I stay under (way under is best) a dollar per pound. I consider hunting to be far cheaper than ...

Naahhh. I don't think head shots are all that great, and I have done a few. A deers head is about as big as a boot, and a deers brain is about as big as a tennis ball. Admittedly, a non-brain hit might still kill or at least drop the deer, but for most hunting situations there are many mobetta money shots. jd

It is not your friends you should be worried about but the convicted felon as he is the one violating the law. I would inform the person bringing in the felon of the law being violated and if you see it happen again, you will be obligated to call the authorites. Yes, you will create a conflict between the two of you by doing this, but you are not the one violating the law. Good luck.

That is a lot of information you have asked for. If you have never hunted it would be hard to put everything in writing that you would need to know. I would suggest hunting with a friend that has some experience.
I will assume you know gun and hunting safety rules.
The best advice that I can give you is to read books and search the internet. In short go to a place where you have seen ...
