Armalite AR-180B Rifle
Published (2009-11-11 02:52:00)
A friend of mine had an AR 180 back in the 70s. Heavy, clunky, not at all accurate as I recall. I was unimpressed. The original AR180 had a metal lower, steel to be exact. They were made out of steel to avoid the negative perceptions of aluminum receivers. Not that a plastic lower would be an improvement. I have not handled a newer one, that one was enough.

I just can't see what Taurus would offer the AR world that isn't already available. IMO, if they are getting in the AR market they kinda missed the boat and probably wouldn't sell many unless they were very under priced.

I'm with smince... never understood why anyone would want an AK to look like an AR. I'd recommend keeping the stock that's on it, or at best putting a good quality polymer stock that is the original ak style

Just reread your post, you're getting 3-4 MOA and checking other issues so OK. I'd still clean the snot out of it w/ copper solvents, the overnight deal, JB, etc, before I gave up and traded/sold.

Coyote Rifle
Published (2009-11-11 09:27:00)
My own experience is that the .223 is plenty good; so is a plain-vanilla .243. The distance limits for shots is a function of shooter skiill, although I tend to think of the .223 as a 200-yard gun. I probably wouldn't pass a 250-yard shot, though. Federal loads for a .243 with the Sierra 85-grain HPBT, which is totally ruinacious on coyotes. It groups as tight as my handloads with that bullet--that I've been using for over thirty...

Steel cased ammo on ARs
Published (2009-11-11 10:32:00)
I just saw Federal XM-193 in a Graffs flyer for $6.79 a box (dealer). Still too much, but if you don't reload it's about as good as you are going to get. Savings like that give you reason to get a C+R even if you don't buy surplus rifles.

AR must haves

Quote: Replace your gas tube every 1000 rounds. It wears where the "penis" goes into the gas key on the bolt carrier. This will cause short cycles over time. Every 1,000 rounds? Is that a typo and you meant 10,000 or are you suggestng that the gas tube wear you describe is about six times faster than the bolt, gas rings, and other wear parts? I ask because typically I do not replace the gas tube until I replace the barrel...

African Carry

Weak side. I like the fact that I can transition my rifle to my left arm only and then draw my sidearm if need be. I currently have my sidearm(well, CCW) weak side crossdraw such that I can easily draw it with my left hand also if need be. If possible I would like to keep this sidearm arrangement in the future, although I am not sure it will be possible. May pretty much be forced to carry strong side. Not sure. I clip the paddle on strong side...

Published (2009-11-09 03:43:00)
I have found that the .357 and .44 Magnum rounds to be loads of fun as well as being an extremely compact package for a home defence they have also proven to be excellent stoppers on wild Boars out to 100 metres (most times ranges are significantly less than that).I was so happy with the Rossi in 357 that I went out and bought an identical one in .44Magnum. I have plenty of other calibers capable of making those 500 yard shots but with the...

By "later model" they may mean all AR180B carbines. That is because, decades back, there was an AR180. It was built on 3 continents The originals had a metal lower receiver. The "B" model has polymer (aka 'plastic'). But there were some of the AR180 made with the flash-hider being machined into the barrel, which I think was a result of Clinton's stuuuupid Assault Weapons Ban. I ...

My first gun that my dad bought me was a Remington 600 Mohawk in a 243. The stock was too long so he had to cut off about 2in. Worked great and I shot my first deer with it when I was 7. When I got bigger, the stock was to short. The only aftermarket stock we could find at the time was a synthetic ramline stock. Pretty cheaply made stock, but it's worked fine and is still on it. I've been looking...

The Browning is a better gun. Their trigger is excellent even though it's not an accutrigger. The fit and finish is far above Savage or Marlin. Whether or not that extra is worth it is differernt for everyone. How important is fit and finish? What's your comfortable price range? etc.etc. The new X-bolt's shoot very well and are lightweight. I really like mine. The new magazine is ...

I'm pretty sure the skills referred to are the sighting skills with a sight system in two parts separated by several inches and some times feet. Also the techniques associated with different styles of open sights, such as repeating the sight picture accurately shot after shot, range compensation with slight changes in sight picture. Those skills are quite handy, but need to be practiced to keep ...

1. Stopping power 2. Proven 3. Common 4. Rugged 5. Light 6. Modular Most of this I think describes the M4. I would rather know people are carrying a .308 cal rifle than a .223. I would not feel out gunned with a M14, but they are heavy. I would like to see servicemen carrying a .30 cal AR system, I have handled some carbines that shoot the .308 that feel as light as ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZU80XnemeU So most people have heard that in Vietnam Gunnery Sgt Carlos Norman Hathcock II shot a North Vietnamese enemy sniper thru his scope and killed him. Super accurate Mosin Nagant Is seems that more people swear _at_ Mosin Nagants than by them. I've read a lot of comments that they are pretty good if they can make a 3" or 4" group at 50 yards. They're cheap. But does _anybody_ say good things about them? __________________...

I do, it prevents rust. I never do, but you could just wipe it out before you shoot. Hopes 9 solvent says to run a wet patch down the bore and leave it there.
