Locally, I found a free handgun safety course that was a great start. I'd worry about safety before I'd start wondering about shooting distance. Perhaps while you're waiting, you could start looking around for classes. What kind of gun are you looking to buy?

Phoebe, if it's not too personal, may I ask what the origins of your initial fear of guns was?

Igor, Then I suggest you carry both a revolver and whatever simi-auto you carry. The revolver for immediate use if surprised and no time (or way) to chamber a round, and the simi-auto, chamber empty, that you can use if you see it coming. Here in Texas there is no law for or against having a chamber loaded handgun. If it's legal for you to have it there, it's legal for you to have it fully loaded. In fact in the USA I cannot think of...

Me again. I think maybe I need to elaborate on my previous comments. First, I don't think it is difficult to work the slide on an automatic under stress, no more than it is to work the gear shift lever in a car under stress. The qualifying point here, however, is that some slides are easy to work and others aren't. But clearly, that is the chief difference in our discussions. Second, it doesn't have to be slow at all, though it...

Another posting on the SERPA from the WarriorTalk site: Quote: Simply put...the Serpa is a poorly designed but brilliantly marketed holster that causes a user to press in with the finger tip as they draw their pistol. In many cases it ends up with the trigger finger right on the trigger (and pressing inward) prematurely. In other words...long before it would be safe to do so. I am aware of five situations where this has caused an AD on the...

Uncle Billy, apology accepted. I probably contributed to the misunderstanding by not explaining very clearly the following, which I believe applies to this thread also: When one uses a firearm in self defense, no matter how strong the justification may be, if sufficient evidence cannot be assembled to support a case for justification, he may be subjected to criminal sanctions, however unjust that may seem. There is also civil liability. Said...

Cross draw holster

Quote: Cross draw has its uses (like for someone who spends a lot of time sitting down or driving), but for most people, strong side carry in a hip holster is most efficient. I alway recommend strong side carry for all the reasons others have already stated. The only exception would be for someone with a physical impairment.

Nice parallel. On that note, Aiki-jujutsu/Aikido was built from the ground up with a one vs. multiple assailants focus (multiple swordsmen actually, but it's been adapted for more modern times). From what I understand the majority of incidences involving concealed carry holders end without shots fired. The CCW holder may display their weapon and that is often enough to defuse the situation. In cases where shots are fired, most states I...

If it's an unexpected bad guy who starts out with bullets flying and you happen to be among the first targets then you're pretty screwed. Fortunately, the VAST, vast majority of SD scenarios are not started with guns blazing. I still say that if the BG even has the gun out then you're going to be in a LOT of trouble. In any case, being ahead on the reaction curve, or getting ahead, is obviously paramount.

"If you're attacked by multiple assailants and you can get the draw, would you just eliminate the immediate threat or all possible threats?" I would eliminate all possible threats (a "threat" being someone with the means, opportunity and intent to cause me serious bodily harm or death). However, I certainly wouldn't fire on any person(s) in the vicinity who "haven't shown any immediate ...

You need to either take the bolt out and drop one of your reloads into the chamber to see if it fits, or better yet, get yourself a case gauge to check the sizing of your cases after sizing. You probably have a chamber thats a bit tight, if it has been set up for national match and you'll need to adjust your sizing die accordingly. RJ

I'll be interested in others' responses, but I'll start. I'll assume the holster is for concealed carry, and not duty: What makes a safe holster, safe? - fits the gun it is made for - holds the gun securely, with or without a thumb break, yet permits easy draw - holds position on your belt so the gun/holster doesn't move around, so you grip the gun the same way, every time - ...

Israel is basically not a pro gun society, but they carry guns for reasons that don't have to be enumerated. They're a bit paranoid of loaded pistols, however. One can learn to draw and rack a pistol with practice. But as we saw, things can go wrong. Don't know how much he practiced, but obviously something went wrong. If it is a choice between taking the gun with me or leaving it at home, I'll take it even if I cannot shoot it one handed. That said I do practice one handed shooting, weak and strong. I am confident with both hands and all the handguns I have. I carry all my guns in the condition that all I need to do is pull the trigger. Racking a slide one handed is not something I want to expect to do. ...

No wonder. Any self respecting police officer should have know better than to get involved in a snow fight. He should have immediately called for an air strike and let the F-16's roll in first to drop a coupe of bombs followed by the A-10 Warthogs to finish the job off with their mini guns. One can only imagine the irreplaceable damage and horrific loss of life had this snow ball fight gone on...
