Hornady LNL vs. Dillon 550b....

A little known factoid is that both the Mustang and Camaro have Chevy engines. Prior to the Mustang 289, Chevy was developing that engine. Chevy managemnt felt they had too many small block engines which required different toolings to manufacture, as a cost saving measure, they dumped the 289 and it's engineer. The engineer went to Ford and the 289 went with him. The rest is history. From an engine performance standpoint, it may have been...

should i be embarrassed that i paid $51 for 1k wlp, winchester large pistol, magnum. the owner of the range has been getting lots of requests from guys that shoot competitions(lots at my range) that would pay any price for them. and they will be gone fast, the owner thinks wed. the range owner got 45k pistol primers, he paid $50 per 1k, so he is loosing the gas from the drive to pick them up. i was down to a few hundred large pistol primers,...

Bigoledude Yeah Katrina made a mess down there, I know, I was in Jefferson Parish. A couple of years later Gustav kicked a little butt here. Glad you're back in "Da Parish". Didier's is long gone, but the poule deau are still paying visits to False River. We're covered up in hogs here too. I been working up some loads for pistol and rifle using them as test subjects. Got 4 this morning using a 30/30. 28 grains...

Chronograph results for 9mm loads
Published (2009-11-13 04:01:00)
Hard to tell what the variation is now? 3 shots is not statistically significant. The first load could still have more variation than the first, but three shots just randomly didn't happen to show it. Harder crimps will tend to improve it. Some find that seating primers extra firmly improves consistency, though that is most likely just a way of insuring no inadequately seated primers are present. Higher charge cut into it, too, but if you...

On jacketed bullets you usually don't see the mark, if you apply the force carefully, don't overdo it. On plated bullets you will usually end up with a visible mark, that does not affect their function. These pullers are great, EXCEPT... on some cone shaped bullets, which do not have enough cylinder part to get a good grab. For those you still need the hammer.

Anyone useing 2230 for .223 loads?
Published (2009-11-14 10:23:00)
I've used a lot of H335, which burns at about the same rate as 2230. Best group I ever shot with my original Bushy shorty was with 335 and Berger bullets. Still don't see how any of this "personal experience" information is going to help the OP much. Nothing beats working up your own loads for the particular rifle you're shooting. The load books give you as much usable information as any of us could possibly...

I'm telling ya Snuffy is absolutely right! Bought the Hornady Cam-Lock and used it on piston rounds! Also as stated here don't shoot the rounds, unload them.

Just a thought out of left field... but is the Lee reloading book the only one you reference? My go-to book is Lyman, but regardless, I always cross reference with another source or two. Why? I guess I'm just (insert whatever word is more acceptable than "anal" here) that way. I'm really close to amazed at the differences in the printed data. And, I gotta do the '+1 thing'...

Honestly, most people I know have caught pure hell trying to reload for the 742 (including me.) Of course, mine won't cycle with factory loads, but I know a few who that will cycle factory loads but not reloads. Don't ask me why. Good luck.

Hey Danny, You really cannot compare the Hornady L&L AP to the Dillon 550; they are not anywhere close in comparison. If you want to compare the Hornady L&L AP to a Dillon of like kind and quality, it would have to be the Dillon 650. The L&L and the 650 are both five station presses with auto indexing, and the 550 is neither. There are countless threads comparing the L&L and the 650, and ...

I can't wait for all those gougers to get stuck with primers they thought they could off for $50 or more per thousand! Even in the middle of it all I still ony ended up paying $24 per thousand by buying in bulk. I didn't have to wait all that long either. Guess I got lucky, but patience played a role as well.

First, you have a valuable rifle there. My brother collects old lever actions, and always finds a deal, but he had to come up with $600 for a good 99 .250. The original 250-3000 got the 3000 part loading a 87 grain bullet at 3000 fps. Those bullets are still available. A better hunting bullet is a 0.257 100 grain at about 2700 fps. I am looking at the Speer #14 Manual. Also available are 120's, ...

What does the primer look like after only one strike? If it looks softer than others, the primer may have slipped forward on the first strike. If it looks the same, and is deep and uniform, Id lean more toward bad primers. I hate my RCBS hand primer tool but it does give you some "feel" as to whether the primer is seated all the way. I remember my boys had a hard time squeezing the tool...

I trust my hand-loads implicitly and to a much higher degree than factory ammo. In 20+ years of on and off loading, I've had exactly one round fail to fire. I don't shoot much factory center-fire, mostly just to get cases when I need them. I've had a few rounds fail to fire and one hang-fire (WWII era 8mm Mauser) in factory ammo.

I try to keep REloading down to 1-2 hours, but Case Prep....... I've had Case Prep last upwards of 6-8 hours or better, but NOT in one sitting. 2-3 hours in a sitting is about all I can manage. I've got to put it down and take a breather after so long...ReGroup.

If you bought the Lee Deluxe four die set, then you have one with carbide components and lube is not necessary. I have that set and have loaded several thousand 9mm, .40 s&w, and ,45 acp without lube.
