The deal with the Colt SAA loading gate on the right is, you were supposed to hold the reins of your horse and the gun in your left hand while reloading it with your right.

Good deal on a 1980s 686?
Published (2009-11-08 06:21:00)
Just as a point of comparison, I paid $475 for my 686-4 (1994) model about a month ago, which was about $100 less than a new 6" Ruger GP-100. It sounds like a very good deal to me. If it's not a "dash-something" model, you want to make sure it has the M designation engraved next to the model #, meaning that it was corrected for an early manufacturing problem.

The cartridge head says ".44 Magnum" on it. The box is completely plain red colored with a sticker on the end of it that says the specs. If memory serves, it says "44 MAG AMP 180GR FMJ" or something like that.

I agree with Jim March about Rugers being more lefty friendly than Smiths, Taurii or Dan Wessons. From what I've seen, DW's are actually more friendly to lefties than to righties with that forward cylinder catch, and Taurus heavy framed guns are just devilish with the dual cylinder catches. But the fastest cylinder catch for lefties is the Ruger design. I have a Smith model 65 that I'm playing with and my technique for reloading...

Hmm, the bluing on that gun isn't half bad at all. That is one nice step in the right direction for Taurus. I just wish they would stop drilling holes in everything they make.

What do you mean by "endshake?" A little bit of side to side and front to rear play is normal on a revolver. Try this test: cock the hammer. Then, with your thumb on the hammer, pull the trigger to the rear. Do not let the hammer drop. Then, slowly let the hammer down still holding the trigger to the rear. With the trigger to the rear and the hammer down, test the cylinder to see how much ...

Grip suggestions for S&W Mountain Gun Here's the problem: The Ahrend's grips on my .44M Mountain Gun look great, and they are comfortable enough when I shoot .44Special loads. Pretty. You found a very nice revolver there and got it for a fair price. It already has a turn ring so I would shoot it. Myself, I'd rather have $700 than a gun I couldn't shoot. kraigwy: Good photo and a nice handgun. Hardcast SWC? What was the load you typically used? I am guessing a heavy (for .357) bullet weight? Shot placement or aimpoint? To my mind, the 2 essential single actions, Ruger or otherwise, are the .357 and the .44 Mag. Assuming of course the individual already has a quality .22 of some stripe. When narrowing the field to Rugers I think the classic outdoorsman's Ruger is the blue 7.5" Super Blackhawk.

There are factors that many people forget about, and they are that velocity and rate of acceleration also play a part. When you push a light bullet fast enough it's energy will exceed that of heavier slugs, thus it's recoil will go up just the same. Sure, 180gr and a 240gr slug going the same velocity, the lighter one will have less recoil. Even a slight velocity advantage in favor of the ...

$560 is steep for an LCR. $450 is about as much as I'd pay for one. They are new and the "cool thing" to get, so they may be driven to artificial values for right now. Frankly, though, I would suggest laying off the buying of guns for the missus. Put $500 in her hand and tell her to shop for it. She'll be more passionate about choosing the right gun, and she'll be less likely ...

After reading your post I went out and inserted some 44 Mag.'s into the cylinder of a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt. I was surprised to see what little difference in fit there is. Your mistake would really, really be easy to do. I have been shooting both calibers for over 35 years and am now wondering if I have done the same thing. My guess would be that the reloaded 44's you bought at the range ...

... but I've never noticed a significant difference out of 2 GP100's or an SP101 that I've owned over the years. Moving at a slower V, the .38's tend to impact higher than the .357's, but I haven't noticed a greater spread. Caveat: I wasn't competing in bullseye, so I wasn't looking for small degrees of difference, just "close enough for government work." There could have been some ...
