What is a conventional hand gun?

He was carrying an FN 5.7 semi-auto and a .357Mag revolver. I expect that the reference to the "conventional" handgun comment applied to the revolver.

... are what I was taught to call "stoppages." I had originally thought the thread was supposed to be about more catastrophic failures. However, I still think that stoppages are often caused by multiple factors. I've seen them caused by bad ammo, bad magazines, bad parts, and bad handling.

I see no compelling reason at all to mix ammo (within a magazine). Now, loading one mag up with JHP and another with FMJ (or whatever)....that I have no issue with. But, again, mixing ammo together within the same mag? Unnecessary and IMHO, not recommended. Besides, do both mags need to be loaded to max capacity? No. For various reasons, I keep my double stack mags (13 round capacity) downloaded to 10 rounds each. Do I feel less prepared?...

Used handgun

Quote: I could see people not treating their plinker pistol with the care it deserves and my lack of gun savvy would make me inept to finding flaws in the gun. My opinion only, but I think it's hard to abuse a .22lr handgun to the point a good cleaning wouldn't fix it. Any rough handling should affect the external surfaces in ways that even a novice should be able to detect. So, if the outside looks good and it's a Ruger, Smith...

I can vouch for the wasp spray. I was painting the trim on my great aunt's house up at the top of the ladder when I was stung by a wasp. That was bad but then my aunt came out with a can of spray and hosed me down. The more I tried to protest the louder she laughed. I had to feel my way down the extension ladder and take it away from her under fire the whole time. When I could open them she saw the murder in my eyes and said"It...

Do you think most firearms failures are gun, operator, or ammo related? I have found that about 90% (just estimating) of all gun failure I have seen are not actually the fault of the gun but more often the fault of the ammo or operator. Ammo is usually the cause but in second place would be operator error. I have seen very few cases where the firearm is the actual issue. I have seen so many people bring a gun into the dealer wanting it sent...

Yeah I looked at it on their website, wish it was .45 though. I'll hold on to the little guy, next gun will be another single stack I can carry.

I've been finding 357 ammo online quite a bit. Just got a good deal on some Fiocchi. .45 ACP has been harder for me to find...and for a decent price...

If the gun functions with both rounds, mixing them in the same mag won't cause any problems.

I think most could be attributed to ammo...after that I'd think it'd be operator error (mainly lack of proper maintenance).

Also, the only handgun I know of that takes clips is a Mauser Broomhandle.

As you may already know, there is the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 3rd ed available. This does have typos but is a great book and a great reference for such detailed info. I'm afraid that via the net there would not be the same depth of info you want or it could be inaccurate. I recommend getting the book. You can find it used and amazon has it.

What guns do you usually recommend to beginners?
This is a two part question. We get threads on here all the time from soon-to-be gun owners looking for advice on their first handgun.
Part one of the question is..."Do you subscribe to the idea of always starting with a . 22 caliber?"
Part two is..."If not, what guns do...

I've found the PPK a bit bulky and heavy for pocket carry, although cargo pockets are OK. I have a Seecamp 32 which carries in a pocket like a .25, it will only feed pricey hollow points, no fmj for the range. A lot of friends are jumping on the LCP bandwagon and seem to be happy with them.

You can get a Ruger MKIII 22/45 for around 260-290 in many places. I bought one several months ago for 265 plus tax from my local shop. If you don't mind buying used you can get the MK II version which doesn't have the loaded chamber indicator or mag disconnect for between 225 and 300 depending on condition.
Browning Buckmarks are around your price range as well as the Beretta Neos and SW ...

I recommend a .22 handgun. And put a lot of rounds through it at a gun range. Get used to squeezing the trigger and holding it steady.
You'll meet a lot of people at the range and get to have a go with their guns, and find out what you like and what you want as your next gun after the .22.

Not in my area.
I was never a hoarder, but with all these people stocking up nowadays, and ammo prices slowly increasing as time goes on, Im starting to stockpile myself.

9mm is to weak. Fort hood info
Just heard on the news that the crazed muslim officer who went on a murderous rampage was shot 3 times in the torso by an MP armed with a 9mm Beretta and kept firing before he submitted. Not only that, he is still alive and in stable condition. 9mm is no good.
This caliber has a long history ...
