PD170 repair/firewire issue
Published (2008-11-16 19:46:00)
good luck with a repair if the firewire circuit is broken / burned out. it will cost you a lot. i had this once with a panasonic camera and they asked 300 euro for a repair. I bought a new camera. But as the vx2100 still has some value it might be worth it if price is not too high.

Hi, I have a PD170 and the firewire connection does not work anymore. It shoots fine, and I can capture with another camera or deck. I took it to a tech in Brazil who told me that the firewire card inside the camera is probably burned out because I connect it to the 6-pin firewire connection of a Powerbook camera, which apparently sends out an electrical charge upon connection and which ...

since I seem to be in a "posting" mood, what is it regarding the Automatic Exposure shift? Does anyone use this feature? When I'm in manual mode, I always leave the shutter speed at 1/60 and adjust the iris for exposure. What do we use the AE for?

OK, how well does the AGC work on this camera? I'm going into a run and gun situation and must rely on auto levels for audio. Banquet envirn. with band playing. I won't be on top of the speakers but must protect against distorted audio. (The camera doesn't seem to have a limiter feature).

seems the switch is going flaky. slightest touch and it's jumping all over the menu items. Makes it pretty difficult to select anything in the menu. Doesn't seem like it can be cleaned. Anyone know about user replacement and how big a job it is? I have electronic repair experience. thx

At these two places I can get the SONY PD 170 for $999 PricingDepot.com - Compare, Shop & Get the Lowest Price! ShopDigitalDirect.com However at B&H it costs $2700 Sony | DSR-PD170 3-CCD Mini DVCAM Camcorder | DSRPD170 | B&H I am well aware of B&H's reputation for selling high quality products and overall customers are pretty much happy with them. I have a tape recorded from a Sony PD170 and then put into a Sony DVR TRV10 to transfer into Final Cut. My question is will using the TRV10 to input into FC instead of the PD170 lose any quality because of the heads or anything else or would it not make a difference. Hope that makes sense. Thanks Bob

My beautiful vx2100 with hundreds and hundreds of hours on it has a cassette jammed in it. Looks like I will have to take it apart to get the tape out. Is there another way? Have been unable to get it to eject and have always used Sony tapes only. If I have to disassemble it, is there a guide somewhere showing what screws to remove? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions....

I recently bought a VX2100 on e-bay.I swore I would never buy used on line but the seller has been very reputable on e-bay so I went for it.The camera arrived, not a scratch on it, the heads were dirty but a headcleaner tape fixed that quick.I charged the batteries took it down to the beach to shoot some surfing.I NEVER dropped it or got it near the sand.Within about 2 hours, shooting maybe 20-30...
