If the Genesis, the F23, and F35 were more affordable to a broader class of users, the same argument would probably apply. What makes them cinema cameras is that they are too expensive to use in productions besides cinema. Regardless of its application, it is flexible enough to shoot film. Mine has been used on two feature films over the past six months. None of my other cameras have been hired for that reason. It's about what the camera...

I consider HD as being something in the range of 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. Anything over that is no longer considered HD. I recall Jim (founder of RED) making a statement when Scarlett was first announced that they do not want to produce an HD camera because their target customer is not the consumers or prosumers. Instead, their aim is to target the professional video/film market where they need something better than HD such as 3k and above. It...

the only thing to add about the 6x17 sensor is , if it's for panoramic then it would have been really cool if it was curved . Can sensors ever be curved ? Because there's nothing quite like a curved filmplane panoramic camera . It's one of the true technological holdouts to continue shooting with film . Otherwise it's only a wide camera , not quite a panoramic . See Noblex .

For any given focal length... The smaller the image sensor, the more narrow the field of view will be. The larger the image sensor, the wider the field of view will be.

Sorry, I hope I haven't scared away people from responding to Jerrod's spot. That was a bit of a diatribe--but I do stand behind the sentiment.

I see the news hasn't made it here yet, but this is big news and deserves to be posted. Red yesterday released a set of plugins for native Red footage to be ingested into FCP, rewrapped into .mov (but NOT transcoded into another codec), thereby creating a new animal: RAW, 12bit Quicktimes. These files can be edited natively in FCP, and the REALLY big news is that they can be sent to Color, ...

All that should keep RED busy for a couple of years. Although, the old 2/3" Scarlet with the zoom is still in there, so perhaps the 2/3" version will be coming out first I'm not sure where all this leaves the RED ONE other than being rather like an old computer case that can be upgraded. I hope they test all these modules in rain, snow, ice and don't go cheap on the connectors. However...

For those who don't know, Doritos is having another "Crash the Superbowl" Ad contest. I had an awesome idea but I thought it would be short lived a bit due to the production quality of the Canon XH-A1. So I saved up all of my Taco Bell money (where I work), got a few donations, and busted into my savings bonds a little, and I rented a Red One with Zeiss Ultra Prime lenses for a day. I have ...

I'm not sure if this is the best section for this thread, so feel free to move it to the correct area. Also, apologies if there is an existing thread. I looked but couldn't find anything. I'm shooting a feature film next year and I'm considering shooting on the Red. I've shot a music video with it, but not a feature. And I'm curious to hear people's thoughts, their complaints, their praises,...

With the Nov 13 announcement, Red Ones are starting to trickle into the market. I talked to Red today about some of the considerations with regards to buying a used unit. There are two way to buy a used Red One: 1) Directly from a private party 2) Directly from a ...

Apologize if these questions have already been addressed. Out of all the excitement of the announcement, some key questions are not addressed: 1. Ergonomics- None of the mock up renderings show a configuration with a top handle. For a single shooter in a run n' gun style, a comfortable top handle is a must. 2. Ergonomics- I see minimum button placements on the exterior. Will everything...

This is a serious question. Like others, I'm getting ready to purchase a Scarlet when it comes out sometime next year - not sure what model yet. Part of getting ready involves selling off current gear to make money and room. I'd love to get your opinions on what to do given the below information. I'll be buying the 5DII from Canon as soon as I can possibly get a hold of one (I didn't ...

Most of the talk on the other thread is about the equipment. While what Jim/RED announced is very cool, the concept is not truly new. There are two main innovations (not technology advances) in the newly announced system, modularity and the ability to produce high quality still and moving images at the same time. Multi-format still systems have been around for 50 years and dockable camcorders are...

I thought a thread devoted to the new fixed lens scarlet , that has not apparently been hogtied , would keep some ideas flowing towards the Red designers . I would really like for the camera to have an articulating lcd , at least a 28mm f2.8 lens , cf recording built-in , a compact battery system , and the high burst frame rate . I think it would be nice to also be able to use it as an dslr , ...
