What is Needed for Digital Video?
Published (2009-12-24 03:14:00)
You know, for the life of me, after shooting with an HMC40, I just can't think of a serious reason to get an FX7 instead, unless you simply cannot handle editing AVCHD. I honestly can't think of any real advantage an FX7 could offer. There's no way an FX7 could match the image quality from an HMC40. They both use 3-1/4" CMOS, so low light performance should be relatively similar (perhaps the Sony chips are a tad better...

Buying Advice (General)
Published (2009-12-23 09:58:00)
My "gut message" is to buy once and buy well. You can't do good work with awful equipment. Likewise, stay out of "poverty mode" when it comes to your thinking. Bite the bullet and get good quality gear. Something may be expensive, but my response is "Compared to what?". Yes, even I have to save up and hold off my purchase until I have the dollars. But it's worth it in the end. Andrew

seeking creative ideas/input
Published (2009-12-17 09:23:00)
Yesterday I printed out a bunch of storyboards and went out to the coffee shop (a more creative atmosphere) and spent about two hours trying to write out ideas. I think for the color assignment, I'll have to go out and just look for colorful things, since it didn't really come to me on the storyboard. There were some other ideas that did, mostly techniques such as time-lapse or animated pieces. Animation comes to mind when my...

Not sure how it works outside of Canada but here your homeowners/renters insurance WILL NOT cover professional gear ESPECIALLY if transported from your home. Consult an insurance agent for a definitive answer in YOUR jurisdiction. ANY other answer is asking for trouble when you need it most.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Robert, the heads are actually the problem, the sticks are fine and I plan on using them with the heads that I buy in the future. I would be interested in the knock offs that you are referring to, might be worth giving them a try. I am actually in Roanoke, VA, why? Thanks for the encouragement, I am just feeling slightly overwhelmed as I am starting to book weddings and want to be able to produce the best...

Welcome aboard, Pat! With time, you'll become familiar with many more names as well, including Blackhurst, Hurd, Ostroff, Hardwick, Bloom, Hickling, Roemich and many more who have basically taught me everything I know. Good luck with your new cams -- I know the previous owner and he babied them and is a helluva brilliant guy ;->.

I've never really been a big fan of formal training. I suppose it's great for some folks, but I seem to learn a lot faster on my own, and just get a whale of a lot more out of self education. That said, some of the best education available, is simply reading as much as you can here, from folks that know what they are doing. I strongly suggest keeping it real simple (at least at first), and ...

Just my opinion, devices that try to do everything tend not to anything very well. Don't fall for the marketing department's attempts to dazzle you with whizbangs. While people have done some good demo work with the movie features of current DSLRs, I think it's still basically for the shooter who wants to capture some motion at the kid's birthday party, not really for serious video work. My ...

never tried or thought about this but borrowing from my audio engineering days...I used (and still use) thick neoprene pads under all my speakers in the studio and now they sell products specific for speaker dampening. For a tripod, you could make pads from layers of neoprene. I'd imagine you'd want them pretty thick (maybe 1-2") and large enough to not wobble. Try this place: closed-cell ...

Someone actually read the EULA? Wow! I wouldn't be too concerned about it--how could they tell? Some people seem to swear by Power Director and more people seem to swear at it. What about the eyes? Anyhow, one thing I was thinking of would be something called "Clown White" which is as you might expect is what the clowns wear. Then pretend you're doing a "White Screen". Not sure if it would work or not, but maybe worth a try. If you do go this route, though, DO NOT FORGET to also get Clown White remover. I had a friend who painted himself with clown white for ...

Tom, It would help to know which editor you are using. There's probably a sub-forum for that editor somewhere on this site. Anyhow, it kind of sounds like the editor it having trouble finding some of the media elements for the project. Maybe you moved the project to a new computer, but forgot some of the media? Or may some of the media was on an external hard drive which is no longer ...

I stepped in HD shooting at weddings in 2007 mixing two Canon GL2 with Canon HV20. Once I"m familiar with HD shooting, editing, exporting, I sold both GL2 and and bought XH-A1. Also upgraded my computer to handle HD. It takes a bit of learning curve to get familiar with the new workflow.
