I too have not yet graduated from VHS. What is the best DVD in terms of picture quality in either Region 1 or Region 2? Expert advice will be warmly welcomed.

The X-mas Splurge!

No, there is no such film (at least, not that I know of), much less a classic one but I have made out a list of DVDs that I want to present myself with for X-mas. I think it is a pretty juicy list: 1. Nosferatu (1922) R2 UK Masters of Cinema 2-disc 2. Battleship Potemkin (1925) R1 Kino (newly remastered) 3. Metropolis (1927) R2 UK Masters of Cinema 2-disc 4. Things to Come (1936) R2 UK Network SE 2-disc 5. Gone With The Wind (1939) R2 4-disc...

The Beaver mentions it too, and there was bit of a fuss at the time (which led to me getting the R2 over the R1). It's Digital Noise Reduction, and if applied too heavily can eradicate detail.

Axe! New DVD. Anyone have it?
Published (2008-11-15 01:49:00)
Has anyone picked this release up yet? Play.com If so how does the picture/sound quality fare? IMDB says the OAR is 1:85:1 but this release, and the US release IIRC, are 4:3? Are they open matte?

I actually own both of those dvd's. I do prefer the R1 version, because of the Ebert Commentary and the wonderful second dvd. So go for the R1.

IIRC the R1 had some aggressive DNR that removed stuff like visible raindrops.

What's the link between the On the Buses films and Terrence Malick? Answer: the late Brian Probyn, who photographed HOTB and is one of the three credited DPs on Badlands, both films released in 1973.

I watched this again the other day. The Region 1 DVD, one of the very first DVDs I ever bought, is pretty good. I can offer nothing about a deleted fight sequence except to point out that there is a waterfront bout in the movie. Neither contestant is black however. I do remember reading a newspaper interview with Charles Bronson in which he lamented the fact that several scenes with ...

I downloaded " Total Video Converter" and I can't get it to convert the video files from my DVD into a common format such as WMV, MPEG, or AVI, or into sound such as MP3 or WMA, which it says it can do. I'm not sure what the problem is. Thte files are in a form called ".IFO" which I could only get to play on InterVideo WinDVD, and nothing else. I'm trying to convert it so I can upload (...
