Does Jack Johnson Deserve a Pardon?
Published (2009-12-23 02:32:00)
not sure i get your point. no matter. if you want to correct a wrong it would be better to give the family of joe louis a tax refund. louis tried to do good and got his hand slapped. i have much more sympathy for joe than i do with johnson. does he deserve a pardon... sure. go ahead for what good it will do now. greg

dude just asking. wow. settle down. kidding kidding. Anyhow.. Gene had evolved significantly from the men of Jeff's ilk. He could read, AND jab. The jab of course invented accidentally in 1912 in Fisher's Landing NY when a man who came to skip stones (that having just been invented) tried to grasp an offending mayfly and by happenchance struck an offensive blow to a fishmonger.

I think the Sharkey-Jefferies film was 'lost' for years not too long after the bout took place....

I just now saw that post. Personal who knows, but Jeffries seemmed to think that Tunney was a weaker hitting easier to hit version of Johnson. One thing to consider about Jeffries was also that crouch of his and his ability to use it. One has to hit down and lose power and Jeffries also could slip and roll coming in. Not that hard to hit uphigh by some, but to the chin, much more so and being a left hook artist with body punches that knocked...

I will definitely concede that men raised in the late 1800's were physically tougher having been raised to be more physically active (in the absence of technological advancements they had no choice) and didn't poison their bodies with excess fast food or other such chemically enhanced store bought foods. These guys followed a diet of organic farm grown fresh fruits, vegetables and meats ate in moderation and trained hard. No flabby...

I read this in an old newspaper, for what it is worth: "I see that Jim Corbett says that he can't understand the poor showing that Gus Ruhlin made against Jeffries, 'for he certainly is not a coward or a quitter.' Corbett sneers at Jeffries as a big bull who is 'overrated.' Corbett certainly demonstrated that while he was fresh and strong he made Jeff look like a fistic novice, but Jeff also proved that he was...

Ronnie Shields as a pro
Published (2009-12-17 19:13:00)
Have to honest Shields didn't really impress me in his bout with Bruce Curry and Costello-saw a good boxer but not as slick as everyone said-was there a performance by Shields that showcased all of his skills?

I think so.
He got a real gift in that Ahumada fight and had deteriorated about 50% from his early years. The fact the guy could come back and defend his lh title from an all-time brutal ko loss to Frazier, plus that long sustained beating from Ali was simply incredible.

I am very excited about Randy Gordon giving of his time to answer questions and speak with the rabble known as the boxing fan here at CBZ. thanks to Hawk (The Pentagon) ins for starting this thread.
I am most interested in his stint as the commish... too which extemporaneous stories and anectdotes will make me more than happy to hear.

Jersey Joe Walcott
If he had fought Joe Louis during his prime years, could he have still gave Joe problems like he did during the later part of Joe's career?
