Singing in the Rain I saw a loooong time ago when I was a kid, but I don't remember how I felt about it. I haven't seen it as an adult...I'll put it in the netflix cue. Any other musicals you recommend that might turn me? EDIT: And I haven't seen Darjeeling Limited yet. Should I bother? Is it different from his other films?

Paranoid Park is a wonderful looking film. Especially the work at night.

Some of the stuff Michel Gondry has achieved visually makes my jaw drop,he manages to make it look completely organic too.Such a clever magician.

MY LIFE AS MCDULL (Hong Kong, 2001) For a relatively recent film that won a truckload of awards all over the world, and cleaned up at the local box office, this is one hell of a difficult film to find - this is utterly inexplicable. It has been out of print for far longer than it was ever in print by now. I was lucky enough to blind-buy it from a Chinese video store in Cleveland, OH when it originally came out on DVD, and that was in all...

What did you think of the use of third-person v.o. in Naked City , Elvis? (And isn't Barry Fitzgerald awesome in it?)

For pure visual wizardry, my favorite filmmaker of all time is Jean Cocteau. Just watch La belle et la bĂȘte and remind yourself it was filmed in the 1940s. I pretty much love everything Conrad Hall ever touched. Malick and his entire crew on Days of Heaven made a film that, to me, still stands as one of the most beautiful things to be shot in the color era and happened to really advance the state of the art. Akira Kurosawa... this guy is...

I always want to talk about animation after I see a Pixar film. Maybe because Pixar does it right. DreamWorks , Blue Sky , and Sony always seem to make subpar films about cuddly animals. Not even Disney seems to make a decent cg film. Now I'll quit riding Pixar's dick, and say I enjoyed Over the Hedge more than Cars (I think). Remember animation is a medium, not a genre.

The rules are simple: Come in here to state what movie you're about to watch, and (hopefully) people will tell you if you should. Sure you could always consult Rotten Tomatoes , but this is more fun. Nochnoy Dozor (Night Watch)

What are some of your favorite or most unusual musical cues and soundtrack selections? Is there a particular song that you feel goes perfectly with a film? On the other hand, is there a jarring song choice that takes you completely out?

Wash's death in Serenity. I suspect that it's because I didn't like Firefly and was forced to see the movie.

All this talk of Snake Eyes (a technical wonder, shoddy plot aside) has really made me realise how much I love (EDIT: unnatural amounts) composition and technical filmmaking. Sure it's important to have strong characters and a good story - and most of the time DePalma manages to miss these - but I find it endlessly fascinating to watch him create visual puzzles. Any other crazy FX shots ...

In JFK, during Clay Shaw's trial, the judge is openly smoking a cigarette right there on the bench. Kind of tickled me, considering modern laws.

Inspired by THE HAPPENING discussion on the "Ten Best Kid Kills Thread", what are movies you enjoy because they are so bad? Although obvious, ARMAGEDDON is one I can keep going back to. Whether it's the 18 days before the asteroid hits Earth or Bruce Willis firing a shotgun at Ben Affleck on an oil rig, I'm always loving every minute of the movie. I'm putting ROCKETMAN on there, too, ...

Clint Mansell has posted some of his temporary work from The Fountain on myspace. Quote: Hi, I've been hunting through my backpages recently, for one reason or another, and I came upon some early demos and ideas from The Fountain. I thought you might like to check out how these pieces started out compared to how they ended up sounding in the film. A couple of ...

From the Movie Stuff I Just Realized thread (and with Dickson's full Dead Again support * ), I somehow recall a thread about Hitchcock rip-offs, but in case it's just a figment of my imagination, here goes: Last sunday I rewatched Branagh's Dead Again to confirm it as one of the greatest rip-offs/ homages/ nods to the righteously called Master of Suspense. The script, the tone, the ...

I'm currently working on a horror movie treatment and thusly have been combing my pretty damn extensive movie score playlist for the right mood music, only to come to a startling conclusion: there don't seem to be that many great orchestral horror scores. Sure, there's the awesome work James Newton Howard did for M. Night Shyamalan's films, and you can always go to the old standby of the themes...

I can't stand Wes Anderson's films. I sort of tolerated Rushmore, but that was it. I've seen them all and for the life of me I cannot stand the fucker. I thought there might be something I was missing, but nope. I just don't like his films. I admire and respect him as a filmmaker, but don't ask me to see another one of his films. The horror genre is a funny one. I can't stand splatter ...

Going to film school made me realize that I love film, not film-making. Next semester I'm going back to Community College to get my Associates, and then (finances willing) I'll be off to a real school majoring in journalism, in hopes of becoming a film critic. Lots of you folks on the boards write for various film websites, your college newspaper perhaps, whatever, so I figured this could be a...
