88MM machine-in stroker pistons (B)

I have a set of them NOS 88mm stroker thickwall MAHLE. I just do not have the heart to use them. It was given me by the local V8 machine shop that went Chapt 11 and it has been on their shelf since the early 70's. I couldn't believe it.

Easier said than done over here. replacement cases don't grow on trees and they come in the same numbers as you guys but the exchage rate sucks. basically a replacement case costs north of $1000 (nearly £700) and I don't care how flamed I get,...

Type I Main Bearing Composition
Published (2009-11-10 22:57:00)
Ding Ding Ding. You guessed it. They are aluminum bearings! no layers at all. Except the split center main bearing that is. It is almost always a steel backed bearing with copper and babbit like most bearings.

push rod slipped out

Pull that rocker assembly back off and check the valve stems height with a straight edge. That one valve may be hung partially open which would explain the extra turns on your adjusting screw to get the clearance right.

The first sign I had of the ends pushing in was was a sharp edge building up around the base of the pushrod ends its not really noticeable other than that so you may want to keep an eye out for it, if it happens you can feel it if you run your...

Dual Exhaust…Differences???

A buddy has those. They have a wicked cool sound more like a V-8. They are not a performance exhaust you will loose HP just like the dual Buggy exhaust.

More important is that it is a 1300cc 40 hp engine.

those are both kits, kits for people who are prepared to do research into what it takes to build a motor that size that will last, abd build the whole thing. Do lots of research. lots.
if you don't want to actually build a motor, your much better off buying a long block.

Probably a collapsed lifter. Could also be a pulled rocker stud, or broken wavy washer if you have them.

An excellent and very much needed article.
Thanks John.

I know the bently manual says to torque the oil pump studs in the case to 14 lbs but can you say take this to 18 lbs without damaging anything.
Are you saying you know something the VW engineers don't??
Torque it to 14 lbs!

The ground goes on one of the mounting studs(on the body) for the nose cone mount. My '76 has a stud on the left frame horn. As for racing, solid mounts negate the need for a ground strap.

The turbo gurus should chime in soon, but I would consider a crank trigger.

I read some of the threads on brakes. Some discs are the best, others say they are over kill. Some so don't bother with the rear, some say get all four.
I have a 73 and would like to upgrade to 4 disc brakes if it makes sense. I live where it is wet a lot. I also want a park brake that works - for parking and help with starting up steep hills.
What brakes should I go with? ...

one problem I see is one is a 44mm & the other is a 40mm
they are two diferent sizes and it won't work.
It would make more sense to try the 40 on your motor.
why not do that ?

Wow those holes are pretty ovaled. I dont think youll be able to drill them out and still have them work reliably...... Why not tear it all the way down and rebuild it? Not that much work to do from the point you're at now!

My better half and I have been having engine conversations for months... she's got a 58 in the garage but it's entirely in pieces and she has got proper plans for it. It's got no engine and that is apparently my department. But herein lies the rub.

I want to say it probably is a bad idea. The wear on the cylinders matches the wear on the rings, so you would need to swap rings and get them in the same orientation for it to work. That would screw up the gap orientation on the rings.
It would be easier (more piece of mind) to give the cyliners a quick hone and get new rings and be done with it.
Better to do it correctly ...

Well, I have an early steering wheel that I need a hub made for. I have a drawing, taper shaft and keyway cutter. But, it seems the machine shops here in town don't care that it's a 50 dollar part. They want 250 bucks to make it! Anybody out there have a lathe at home that can make this for me with out rapeing me in the process? Any help would be appreciated. It's for my wife's 61 double ...

Hi there,
Here's the situation...
I'm trying to synchronize the carbs, and on one of the carbs, when I loosen the idle knob so the idle goes low to where it almost shuts off, the idling stays the same, as if the motor is running off one carb. When I do the same thing to the opposite carb, loosening the idle knob, the idling goes low, then shuts off. I was told I might have a ...
