Rollcage

yeah my friend got one and was quite dissatisfied with it. said he had to custom fit it and even then it still looked bad. i have yet to see a bolt in roll cage that is: cheap, looks good, actually just bolts in and fits.

aluminum beam without shock towers?
Published (2009-11-28 20:35:00)
I have also driven a beetle with no front shocks and it was one of the scariest things I have ever done. I was next to a big rig and I kept speeding up and the faster I went the more the front end bounced around, fortunately I was paying attention and I slammed on the brakes before I ended up under the truck next to me, I had to drive 5 mph home.

Need help identifying Torsion
Published (2009-11-20 10:24:00)
I was just on Barriens website looking at those. I would suspect they would fab up a pair to fit the larger torsion diamter. When you guys talk about shock & shock mounts. Are you suggesting coil over as my primary suspension type....i.e. don't use the actual torsion bars, spring plates, etc... From my perspective it would certainly make life easier not dealing with the factory torsion. Thanks.

The only exception would be if the DMV found out that the existing/original smog or exaust system was modified, then the DMV can deny your registration. it won't fit, period. it comes 3" too tall, to work with lift kits. you have to cut it to fit your ride.

Ya it looks cool, but you will not be happy unless you are just sand-dragging the car on a flat track. From experience, a sandrail with no shocks is no fun in the rough stuff - the front end will get squirrly real fast. EDIT - sorry, I read that wrong - i thought you wanted off-road only. I don't have any experience with street and no shocks.

the spring plates are early beetle for sure. as far as telling left from right, I don't think VW ever had a way to identify the difference between left and right. I know that most of the aftermarket bars are stamped "L" and "R"

GOOD LUCK??? i think you will need another can of WD 40... but really.. it looks like you have a good start I wish i had a 64 or older bug. Is that surface rust on the floor boards or are they just rotten? depends what you want to do with it depends on the kind of advise you get. i'd say start by getting running and fix the brakes and then let us know. GOOD SCORE!!

Have your son stand behind the car to spot you and watch the tire while you SLOWLY start moving and see if it starts to bend then have him follow you home in another car if it looks ok. You may make it home if you take it really easy but you might not. Probably not the best advice but I would at least try it even if it only rolls 10 feet

OK, check this out. When my girlfriend was a kid, she refered to a VW beetle as a "beaver". So I have a "baja beaver"! That is what we call it. Anyone ever heard a VW beelte nick-named a "beaver"? Ha! I get lots of attention in my baja. Common question- "Is that a Volkswagon?" Always good compliments. Not many of them around anymore.-especially bajas!

I don't know much about the Penzoil filter. If you're looking at Fram, use only the HP1. It's built for higher pressures, other model fram filters can blow up from the pressure. I have friends who've experienced this. Or go with the K&N equivalent.
