Eng. Sergio Sartorelli left us.

Hello Everyone, In my capacity as president of the Karmann Ghia Club of North America, today I found in my in-box an email from my counterpart with the Karmann Ghia Club of Italia. I am passing it on to you verbatim: _____ With deep sadness I'm deeply sorry to  inform you that yesterday November, 28th our beloved Honorary President Eng. Sergio Sartorelli died in Turin. He leaves a terrible  void in all people who had know him and so...

Ah sad news. For those who are unaware of Sergio Sartorelli he was one of the Ghia Studio's chief designers in the 1950s and '60s and instumental in the design of the Type 3 Karmann Ghia along with a number of striking designs for other car manufacturers.

no oil drain plug
Published (2009-11-27 20:32:00)
If the sump plate is a 40 HP or later it is the same size. Just take the plate off for complete cleaning for long lasting bearings. The plug type of sump plate is more likely to result in burnt fingers from the hot oil if you do drain the oil via the center drain bolt.

Hi Im putting my Ghia into hibernation for the winter does anyone have any recommendations for protecting the brightwork (chrome bumpers) during storage? I have a dehumidifier in the garage which seems to work well but is a bit temperamental, I have heard of people applying wax and leaving it on or even a light smear of grease, any ideas? Airhead

Do the super cheap front end drop and put 2 big bags of dog food in the nose of your ghia. Haha, just kidding, huh. No, none of us have ever done that to see how our cars would look lowered. Right? I agree about the adjustable front end, I am installing mine this weekend so I can go from stock to lower. I am installing the Avis style adjusters. I will post pics of my progress.

Using "antique"...
Published (2009-11-28 11:27:00)
In Texas, what does happen if you get caught driving an antique plated vehicle to the local BBQ joint or Lowe's? Is it a fine, suspension, hard time.... From browsing forums I've not found anyone who's been tickted for this offense. Some have been driving their "antique" for years without a problem. Of course, in an accident or other violation, it might catch up with you. My "new" Ghia looks...

AFAIK, the best option would be the Show Quality dash pad offered by KGP&R. They advertise it as 95% of original in look/fit. Having installed a few of these, no complaints from here.

Although I have a coupe I would think the dash pad first. It is easier to put the defroster outlet screws in with the windshield removed. I found that the hard way with my coupe. The defroster duct screw closest to the windshield post ia a grade a Beeatch!

If you want to adjust your cars height, put in an adjustable beam. Shocks are not a good way to do it because you can't predict how much they will affect the height. Koni reds are adjustable in rebound only. Not compression.

With an antique plate in Texas you are right that it is only good for special events. No one ever gets stopped, but if there were to be a wreck it might get ugly. On the other hand they will not inspect a '74 for emissions in Texas, only for the safety items such as brakes, lights, horn and so on. One thing you can do there, which is neat, is find a pair of '74 license plates, and use ...
