wahing hands in kitchen sink

I sort of grew up with the no handwashing in the kitchen thing, but I thought it was so that people wouldn't be underfoot in the kitchen, not because of any hygiene issues. I've read in many authoritative sources that just running cold water over one's hands for 10 seconds was enough for something like 95% of cleaning. Marcolo, thanks for the point about the parasites. My grandmother taught my mother that every child should eat...

I was going to be 'funny' and say you could put in a stone, walk-in fireplace with a big, black pot, like I remember from teaching about Colonial times to my kids...But I think you may be on to something with the cabinet hardware idea. Your choices don't seem country to me, though, more transitional. Colonial stuff always seems to be brass or black/wrought iron. Sometimes the black is hammered to look like a blacksmith made it....

If you have the room in your kitchen, by all means make the run deeper...you will gain extra work space and, if you also make the cabinets deeper, more storage. Regardless, I would definitely make the upper cabinets at least 3" deeper (15" instead of 12"). To answer your questions, yes, many people increase the depth of their cabinets and/or counters...not just to compensate for a deeper refrigerator, but to get more counter...

I'm stupid, those prices were only for the fixture, the shades are extra. They run around $150 - $200 each.

"and to get the thinking behind some of the more unusual configurations." i don't think there was 'thinking' behind most of them... unless it was drunk thinking! yep, there's a bunch of sad pathetic kitchens on here. with some very hideous wallpaper! even worse, is to think there are people living in kitchens like that with no future redo/update possible for them. that's been me for the past 11 yrs! otoh,...

Prill, Any news today? This is a worrisome time. We value their lives because they are so close to us but we understand their time is short. I so understand when you say it felt terrible to come home without her. I can only imagine the anxiety, sadness, worry and heartbreak you must be in. I know I would keep reaching out to pet only to remember my dog is not there. :*( but instead in the vet's office. Thinking of you and hoping you know...

I think you need to look at your kitchen in relationship to the rest of your home. If the space is large and ornate, it almost begs for the staggered look. On the other hand, my new home is an updated Craftsman-ish design. It will have all the trim, but clean lines and a strong horizontal emphasis, and both the kitchen and the area of the house it's in are on the smaller side. So staggering ...

I had the same dilemma. What I did was...first...wait a year before painting. Just kidding, it actually took me that long. It wasn't a plan. What I really did was look at many finished black and white kitchen photos and found all the ones I liked best had "yellow" walls. Then I searched the Decorating Forum and Finished Kitchen Blog for wall colors. Plus asked people who posted the ...

I think Jant's light fixture is what makes hers look colonial, so I think you could definitely try that. I also think you might be right about darker pulls - maybe oil rubbed bronze. Your cabinet door style is pretty cottage-y, but maybe some accessories could colonial it up - pottery crocks on the counters, a rug in colonial-type colors (dark reds, blues, golds, in a "traditional" style ...

That truly awful layout would be a deal breaker to me unless I could do a complete remodel before I took possession. The cabinets may be in OK shape, but they're the old fashioned built in place kind that cannot be reconfigured very easily at all. And, they have the old fashioned wonky drawer runners that probably aren't in that great a shape. This is at least a 20K expense right off the ...

We did/are!! Our design had us relocating the kitchen to another room entirely. The only things we hired pros for were: -major structural changes(removal of load bearing wall) -plumbing -electric the major challenge has been acting as our own GC and doing this while my husband and I both have full time jobs. Our free time is minimal and weekends are devoted to getting as much work...

Love these tiles but they are busy. Can you post pics of cabinet, countertop, and backsplash so can see how they all would mesh together?? This floor would certainly be a focal point in your kitchen. It's very pretty. I like it.
