transition from oak to cherry
Published (2008-11-29 00:34:00)
Practicality of slate is understandable, and slate is beautiful. What if you ran a band of slate all around the edge so that it tied in with the whole room, rather than just a little slate stoop at the door(s)? Then it could come out a little bit at the door to make it deeper, and could even be on the now ceramic step.

Engineered vs. Hardwood
Published (2008-11-27 21:42:00)
There are some great Oak/Maple engineered hardwoods with 3mil or better top layers that start under $4.00 s/f. You should get at least one COLOR CHANGE if not two. Shop around....they are out there.

Engineered vs. Hardwood

Looking to instal hardwood throughout a newly built home (upstairs and main level). Is one better than the other? My main concern with engineered is what if I want to change stain colour in the future by sanding thin top layer?

Tile on Mud room stairs?
Published (2008-11-28 19:05:00)
It's not a problem to do that at all. You'll need to remove the vinyl and install an acceptable underlayment for the tile (durock, hardibacker, ditra, many others...). As for laying out the steps, there are several ways to deal with the nosing of the step. You could simply leave the painted edge of the field tile exposed, use a bullnose if available or use a metal edge. Totally a matter of personal taste.

Thank you Handymac for sharing the pictures and explaining the details. Looks like an old floor so you accomplished what you wanted to do. It shows us that Maple can be interesting and is harder than oak.

Tile on Mud room stairs?
Published (2008-11-27 11:11:00)
Hi - Can anyone give me advice about tile on stairs? Our side entrance has a very small mudroom area with 4 steps leading up to the kitchen. I would like to tile this area, including the steps. Thoughts? We considered wood, but were told this would be $$ plus wouldn't hold up well with water. We currently have vinyl down, and could also replace this area with new vinyl. Thoughts? Thanks for any help!

HAPPY TURKEY DAY but.... Help please!!! We have purchased Wilsonart Red Label laminate and acoustic pad for our dining and office rooms. The two rooms subflooring is off by 1/4 inch from each other. Each room is rather small, about 10 by 12 feet each. There is a double french door separating them. Should we treat the area as one and grind the high/ build up the low? Or use a thinner pad on the higher floor? Or should we have the 2 floors meet...

How do the price and R-value of Sound Solutions compare to FloorMuffler or any other reasonable underlayments? We'll be installing over a hydronic radiant floor (REHAU Raupanel), and want to be able to get good performance with low water temperatures.

I'm fed up with my laminate floors! I bought this house 1 1/2 years ago, and I was thrilled to have laminate flooring throughout the downstairs, after living with carpet for years in my last house. After a water cooler catastrophe, our floors are now swollen along all the seams and have been building up scratches since we moved in. On top of my frustration with water damage, I also work with ...

I am re doing my kitchen, it is u shaped and on the smaller side. I am looking at a porcelain tile that comes in many sizes. Each tile is alittle bit of a different shade but it is not busy. My question is...Do larger tiles make the space look bigger. And would it make it busier to use 18x18's along with 6x6's or is it better to keep it simple because its a small area? I appreciate your feedback....

I would love to see some pictures of installed maple flooring. With so many choices, I'm having a hard time deciding. We are going with an engineered floor, in a medium shade with low sheen. I'd love 5" boards, but have read some horror stories. It's so hard to envision what an entire floor will look like from a sample. We are installing throughout the entire main floor, in an open floor ...

Hi. I bought an 8x10' shag area rug, and the backing on it seems fairly scratchy. I am putting the rug in a 10x12' bedroom that has a parquet floor. I am wondering if I need to buy proper underlay, or could I just use a sheet under it. I asked at a couple flooring places today. One told me that I couldn't use underlay because it would bunch up. The other place told me that I should use ...

We have oak flooring in our entry and kitchen and would like to extend it into the family and dining rooms. From what I've read, it doesn't sound very difficult to match the old and new colorwise if you do a complete refinish. However, it seems a lot harder to tie the old and new planks together. To avoid having a line, do you cut out several of the old planks so you can slide in longer ones?...

I bought a house last year with 12x12 ceramic tile in the kitchen and sunroom. When I pulled out the dishwasher and range to replace the appliances, I discovered that the former owner had laid this tile directly over 6x6 ceramic tile - all over a slab foundation. Before long, I started to notice a 'skritching' sound when walking on some areas of the floor, so I suspected that the upper layer ...

I was going to get laminate, but I'm now thinking about installing a 3/4" oak floor. First question is, are all the nailer/staplers pnuematic? Second question is, if I rent a pnuematic stapler then how big a compressor do I have to rent? I can always take a few weeks and use an old fashioned hammer and nails, can't I?
