Indoor Bike Trainer

Second spin class today and it was much better this time. It all has to do with getting used to the feeling of the bike. Alex if you go I have one tip, when standing turn up the resistance. If you have the resistance too low it feels very unnatural.

Thanks, Jason. Tomorrow is a beginner's session so I hope to get a hang of the different positions, etc. and to put advice like that to use.

One of the keys is to always have enough resistance on the wheel, particularly during sprints. You don't want the flywheel to take over the motion (or you could injure yourself).

Tree of Life

This came to my e-mail inbox today. It made me think of you all and gave expanded meaning to the Tree of Life ring I wear in memory of my dad. "True friendship is at the core of any happy life. If our family is our root system, our friends are our fellow branches. We're all striving together, supporting one another, providing shade and comfort." —Addie Johnson

Yule or Christmas?
Published (2009-12-18 15:14:00)
Chris: Youre right, its tasty and with raisins and almonds its even better. Alex: In ancient times there where a sacrifice at Yule, to worship the Viking gods, 9 male of each animal on a farm was hung upside down in a special tree, the throat was cut open and the blood run out on the ground, that means 9 pigs, 9 cows and so on, but the slaves that the vikings held where also part of it... This is a tradition that where broken when the Vikings...

Prayers and Good Vibes Needed
Published (2009-12-22 10:07:00)
A colleagues boyfriend (he's 29, she's 26) suddenly developed severe heart palpitations and angina. They ruled out a heart attack and a CT found a tumor astride the top of his heart last week. They believe it is infringing on the nerve that regulates heart rythym. A needle biopsy path showed "scar tissue" that might be from an extragonadal germ cell or Hodgkins or non-Hodgkins lymphoma. It's confusing. What did...

We've had a CycleOps trainer in the basement for a year and I think Sean used it a handful of times at most. I was thinking of using it on the coldest days this winter but, to Jason's point, sitting in one fixed position in the basement isn't very appealing. I'm getting sick of tripping on that thing on the way to the weight rack.

Maybe in America the GP practice would be already trying to settle with you to avoid it reaching court. But in the UK a completely different picture. You'd probably get nothing from them unless you made a ton of publicity. Mind you, I've never tried to sue an NHS trust so I don't really know. Perhaps it can be done for free? But then again, would any money from them make a difference to...
