That's an interesting question! The reasons vary between individuals, but the way I see it, it's human nature to fear the unknown.  Because darkness obscures reality, we can't acquire that sense of security in the absence of light.  It's an instinctual thing, and likely one that has been ever present in human beings.  Hearing noises or believing to have seen something in the dark is frightening...

ahhh Chloe, I'm so sorry!   I have the same situation with the locker, except it's always this couple making out and I can't like ask them to move or anything because it's SOOOO awkward!     and with your sister, every sister does those kind of things, with fights. Just don't let it get you down too much, but if it is, maybe try to talk to her about it or something?!   I hope...
