You could have an issue with your Video Card driver But to be sure download Memetest and burn the image to a boot CD and run several passes of the tests with each RAM chip separately and then together. If it passes, get into Safe Mode and uninstall the Video driver, then download the latest one. If you can't, then remove the Video card and use the onboard VGA port. If that works then you know it's your video card.

You can run a repair install of XP to repair the damaged file. Follow the instructions on the guide here: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-t...s-XP-t138.html

That's probably the issue here as well. The filename of the process (ZCfgSvc.exe) implies it's a "Zero Configuration" service of some kind. This is a wireless function, so it fits the bill. You may of course want to use your wireless card, so I'd try updating the drivers first.

Hello rgislason Do you have a Logitech QuickCam installed? It sounds like it is not installed properly. Try uninstalling then reinstalling it again and see if that clears things up. .

This could also happen if the file's not really an AVI file. I remember on p2p people had a very annoying habit of renaming other filetypes to AVI (usually wmv or mpg - the former for spam pop-ups). Like previous poster suggested, avicodec is an alternate tool. You can also try gspot ( http://www.headbands.com/gspot ) or mediainfo ( http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net ). All those should tell you if the file is even an AVI to start with.

Very good: Thank you for posting with that information. I am sure that it will be of use to those who come upon this thread when searching for an answer, as you have done. Googling "alidvc" brought up no results at all, making this entry very suspicious and possibly malware-related. "TfKbMon" on the other-hand, is likely related to the use of ThreatFire: Do you use or have you used ThreatFire? code 39...

If you press ctrl+alt+del does the task manager start up?
--If so, click on start new task, and in the box that pops up type explorer.exe
--If not, does holding down the Windows key (between ctrl+alt) and pressing R bring up the Run box?
----If so, type in explorer.exe and see if it runs.
If none of these options work we'll try to look for some other option, but if it works at least ...

What you need to do is clone your old hard drive onto the new one, rather than just copy the data. There are various tools that will do this for you; Acronis True Image is popular at the moment and offers a free trial. Make sure that you boot from your old drive for this otherwise the cloning will fail.
After cloning, unplug your old hard drive and plug the new one in its place; make ...

You cna boot from the Pro disc . . delete partitions and then create new ones and install.
This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install.
http://www.techhandbook.com/windows/...g-Windows.h tml
You will need the product Key that matches the disc you use . . Home, Pro or MCE

I've reposted the zip file here so that it is easier for others to get to. I'll see if I can get someone better in here to take a look for you, see if they find anything else.
It seems the cause is a display driver, try booting into safe mode to see if you still have the same problem. If you can update the drivers from here it would be a good idea (You will need to boot into safe mode with...

Hello WMikeD
You need to leave the following three files on "C". Do not delete them at all or XP will not boot.
Boot.ini
ntldr
Ntdetect.com
You cannot format the drive, but can only delete all files except these three.
Then go into msconfig
In the Boot.ini tab, click "Check all boot paths". That will remove the unwanted dual-boot entry.

Boot into Safe Mode and go to Start/Run and type CMD and hit enter. In the Command Prompt type chkdsk /f/r and hit enter. Then type a Y and reboot the computer.

Make sure you have updated drivers first of all. Both chipset drivers and VGA drivers. Don't bother with anything you found on accompanying CDs, get the latest from the manufacturers website.
EDIT: You may want to try to uninstall the existing VGA driver completely before installing the new ones btw.

Hi
So what you are saying is that you deleted the wrong line of boot.ini and can't boot into the one with the drivers installed?
You should find the files somewhere on the HD where the other OS was installed.

Boot into the Bios and see if the new HDD is listed there. If not, is it a SATA drive or IDE. If it is a SATA drive, and it's listed in the Bios, change the Mode of the drive from AHCI to Compatibility mode, or EIDE, ATA or Legacy(depending on the bios). If it is EIDE, then you don't have the jumper pin set correctly.

Disk space shouldn't be an issue.
What type of files are you having problems with?
WinRAR works with self-extracting (.exe) files, .zip files, .rar files and most other compressed formats. I suggested that so we can get a log and hopefully trace where the problem starts.
