I'm happy about that. Personally, I try to manage assumptions just as other design options like architecture or sizing data and keep records. Even more critical than forgetting assumptions is making later on other assumption that are contradictory to earlier ones!

What a challenge. How about an IR scatter device (pointing downard through the rain) with a range of LASER wavelengths to use the change in scatter between each to determine the size of the water droplets? You could also use frequency response methods to determine the raindrop size. The latest dust size and density measurement devices use this technique and it is more immune to getting dirty that obscuration or image shape analysis methods...
