Have you tried to connect the sound with HD device through a standard cable and not with HDMI? I know that problem. Because HD
video signal + audio signal do troubles sometimes.. Or maybe you have checked your HDMI cable? Maybe the cable causes those problems?

I've been using WMP (Windows Media Player) to rip CDs, can't remember about whether it can/will burn them - and I'm not too sure about whether it will rip DVDs (but I doubt it would).....

To answer your last question, the concept of fair use has never been thoroughly tested in court with regard to encrypted DVDs. The one case by the MPAA against
321 Studios effectively put 321 out of business, but the judge did not rule regarding the constitutionality of the DMCA. He simply interpreted the DMCA to mean that bypassing encryption was a violation of the owner's copyright.
