I've been teaching for 22 years now and my bathroom policy is to always give a very firm and stern "NO!" (usually with arms crossed), even if they say, "But, it's an emergency." I respond with, "It's always an emergency." If that student comes back a second time then it probably is an emergency and I find a way to quietly allow that student to take 1 minute to hurry down the...

I don't know. How many times a day do you say, "NO" ? It seems your students would know the answer is no, and not ask. You then come up with ways out, even giving them leeway. Then do something that I should call ridiculous: Walking halfway down the hallway to check on them for taking too long. Your bathroom policy is all wet, pun intended. After further review, you claim your bathroom policy is No, No, No, No,... but in...

Mr. Yu, Part of the reason I was so taken aback in that case was that I had never, up to that point, encountered an openly defiant student before. I had never had a student look me in the eye and defy me, and I certainly wasn't about to keep a student in my room who thought he could get away with it. I later learned that the student involved (and his parents) had major problems with authority, and had butted heads with every teacher since...

Here in South Carolina they do. Two boys was fighting and the teacher broke the fight up buy gaving one of the boy by the arm and miss and grab part of the arm in Dec 2009. This came up last week after the child told the teacher he was going to get him in trouble because the child go in trouble that day. And the next day he got hit with this. He went to the law office today and told them what happen and he did grab the kid the wrong way by...

Stephen is right. DO NOT BREAK UP FIGHTS. The last fight I broke up was 7 years ago, and a kick in the head was what it took to sink in that I am not the police. It gets to be a macho thing too, that male teachers need to not get s ucked in with. It's not about if you can or can't, it's if you should. I have been trained by the district in how to break up fights, but still refuse. But that certification I got on that last fight...

That's quite true. I'm very sceptical of anyone who claims to have 'the' way to approach classes. In my case what works for one class may not work for another, so why would I assume that someone else's approach would work for all my students? Middle school can be a real jungle. My best recommendation is for everyone to read Harry Wong's The First Days of School. (BTW, that title should be underlined, but I don't know how!) The three scenarios described by the previous poster are tackled in his book. I saw it every day when I was teaching. (I am a stay-at-home mom.) It is not really about being mean or strict--it is being organized and having proper classroom procedures...

I kept track and held them to it. This year, I have a bathroom, but still, I give them 2 times per 9 weeks. My reasoning is. Classroom management. It establishes that their are rules to follow ...
