hey you arent alone, that bothered me too. Though to be honest some of the younger musicians I meet are less about actually having any originality and more about the idea of being a musician. _________________ Putting the I in Digital since 1999

If it sounds the way you want it to, what does it matter? I need sound "X" and my budget is "Y", if Microphone "Z" fits both parameters, it's as good as sold. End of story.

Interesting to see a bit of his setup. I haven't heard of him but I liked the "psychedelic" thing he played. I kind of hate it when people say "no one knows how to play anymore". I understand that kind of comment but I don't agree with it. Also that everything is just fast paced and computerized. I know I work on computers, but my recording experience/process is FAR more related to tape, or at...

I was not much into handheld condensers but was asked to order this mic for a friend, so we gave it a trial run in the studio and I was totally amazed at the clarity never before have i wanted to take a handheld condenser and put it on the grand piano or anywhere else in the studio. we (friends and engineers and audio school grads) will be be recording some samples on this Superlux 1" gold plated 3 uM thin film diaphragm. 20 to...

really? i have found almost ALL pitch shifting software to leave strange glitchy artifacts. But after a little hunting around i found out that Reaper has a built in varispeed function so I downloaded the trial version and it worked like a charm. So dead simple too! i can't believe other DAW's don't all seem to have this function built in (apparently logic does now). _________________ the new rules : there are no rules

Hipster I can't understand what you're trying to say... And all of my mics have wizards and elves inside of them making them work. I don't every take them apart because I'm worried that one of them might escape and my mics won't work anymore.

Mishima and Melville were no slouches either. I've got an old issue of a guitar magazine that has Burroughs interviewing Jimmy Page. Pretty interesting. The questions are better than the answers. I had kids in an English class do Burroughs-style cut ups. They didn't get it.

Low $$ noise gate - Any good ones?

We have a 4 channel JBL M644 noise gate at the club I do sound for, and I like it a lot. Not sure how it would fare under studio conditions, but it does what I need it to for toms and snare on stage. Very easy to set up. I don't think they make them anymore, but I'm sure there are used ones around. The 12AX7A is a "low noise" 12AX7. You can get a RCA/GE 12AX7A NOS off eBay for $10-$15. A 6072A is a "low-noise" substitute for a 12AY7. 6072A's are pretty expensive NOS, but you can get a nice RCA/GE 6072 for $10-$15 as well. Money well spent, I think. NOS tubes will last a heck of a lot longer than the chinese crap around today, so you'll probably never need to change them again. I would go on...

A) blank tape makes noise. Hence recording hotter than the noise level [see signal to noise ratio]
B) How's the alignment, both mechanical and electronic, of the deck?
C) RMGI tape is 'problematic' _________________ Tony

sounds pretty cool. I'm in.
But now for the all important question: What will it look like? At that price point, surveys show that consumers are interested in "cool factor."
Ok, it was a survey of me.

hey all-
considering adding a real hardware spring reverb unit. i've got a couple patches on various multi-effects boxes, but something makes me think i could do better with the real deal. i did one session where a guitar player brought in a fender that sounded amazing - i put everything through it - though it was obviously meant to be in a guitar setup (and rather large). best ...

Madooma is selling 2 on Ebay right now. I'll just say the prices (at least for one of them) seem HIGH. Probably not high enough to get you 2x M160 with loot to spare, but for a dynamic mic, the prices seem pretty wild. Madooma is known for that though. _________________ Ryan Slowey

Seems a drop or two of hot glue would be a better and more permanent solution.

I really like old JBLs though there are so many damn models I cant remember which is which. I do recall that some had kind of screwy midrange, some have a weird treble. They all sound very nice for hifi speakers, which of course doesnt mean you can mix on them.
I DO like the paper cone for midrange and treble that the model in question has. I have always liked how that sounded better than ...

I think every engineer has a mic fetish I know I do, and it is great to find great sounding mic's that are worth more then the MSRP, I did record the R102 and a Superlux CM-H8A on Piano in mid/side configuration, the sound and clarity did amaze me. Also tested their ECM 999 reference mic's as overheads give a listen they pick up the kick like you are in front of the kit, take a listen: http://...

Look up "Universal Shockmount" on eBay.
http://shop.ebay.com/garytheplantman/m.html
You'll find some basic shockmounts available from "GaryThePlantman". I have two and they've worked well. I'll probably get two more down the line. Saves $60 over the AT shock[ingprice]mounts.
Good luck.
