i think this is a killer idea. if you could do this with a touch sensitive surface, like the big hp all in one screen thingy desktop, it would be absolutely stellar. but the korg controller with a laptop is a great idea too. i wonder if there is an actual program one can get that would handle this type of thing.

What happens in the box, stays in the box. Just kidding. Route your track to an output from your DAW to the input of the hardware device, route the output of the hardware device into an input on your DAW. Record.

Duct tape recording
Published (2009-12-08 04:09:00)
I just finished up recording an album with a Brazillian artist named Eduardo Kremer. Good music, great guy, lots of fun to track, but almost as soon as I had finished tracking the songs, my recording PC started screwing up on me. Long story short, I had to reinstall XP (after saving all my sessions to an external HDD), and after that, my sound card gave up the ghost (see my post about Tascam's PCI-822). So here I was, needing to mix and...

Thanks, Jeff. I hadn't heard of any such critters that I was aware of... but if they exist, I figured someone here would know... (I'd think they should exist, but since so many people I work with - and apparently most of the planet - are all about softsynths these days, maybe not...)

Well gee Jim, apparently not. I'm surprised. But, sadly I have no experience to relate. I think you may be pioneering here. So maybe you can start the latest trend? If it works out let us know.

considering your price point, I would suggest the M-Audio 2496. It's nearly bulletproof and sounds damned good. Certainly nothing fancy, but it's super solid.

Published (2009-12-01 10:13:00)
I had the MBox 2 as well. You should be able to overcome the latency issues by setting the buffers as low as possible (under set-ups). You can also set it to be your primary sound card (go to the sounds prefferences on you computer). I was using it for midi instruments with no issues. Same goes for monitoring. It's not the best box but it's a cheap and easy way to get into Pro Tools (if that's what you want). Knowing PT is...

In that case, be wary of the 002...the 003 will have a longer supported lifespan. Do you remember how quickly & unsympathetically Digi cut off support for Mix systems when HD came out? How much demand have you, personally, had for PT session compatibility? If it's something that will actually bring clients to you, it could be an asset. If clients will come to you regardless, then ...

You'll find there's quite a bit of Echo love here. I use an Audiofire2 at work all the time. It's easy simple to set up and use, and it always works. I often have to wear several hats at once during shows, so I've hit "record" many times, walked away, and came back an hour or so later and everything was still running smoothly (using it with both Logic 8 and Peak 5). It sounds very good ...

And here I am thinking that you'd just figured out how to literally record to a spool of duct tape..now that would be truly amusing. I recorded a bunch of "demos" for a band I was in a few years ago and then we took some time off, and when we came back to them some of my sessions had become scrambled due to hard drive failure...would have been a huge pain to reassemble everything in ...

Keep in mind that all those 3rd party ignition pack plug-ins are "light" versions. The 003 is an improvement, but from what I've heard, a BLA modded 002 would sound better and cost less in the end (assuming the 002 is used and the 003 is new). The 003 definitely has the nicer features though. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/palinilap

I've got a Tascam PCI-822 sound card that I use with my TM-D1000 mixer and my PC running Windows XP. Everything was hunky dory for about four years until I recently had to reload Windows (for the first time) on my PC. Once I did, I downloaded the latest and final driver from Tascam's website. Now I have zero audio in or out of my computer. I've checked my device manager- it says my sound card is ...

Most likely a MIDI driver will be needed to run USB, and most likely that driver will exist as software for Windows or OSX, therefor you will need a computer. Edit: Looks like the Novation Xiosynth is class compliant, so you may not need a driver for most of the uses (Novation mentions that there are drivers for some advanced uses). I am not aware of any USB to Midi cables to go ...

If the software you're using isn't designed for multi-proc (most isn't) then raw cpu speed is more important than number of cores. I've been favoring fast P4's over slow dual cores for cpu intensive media applications.
