I'm unsure of what you mean by 'clip like a digital system' as well! The digital part is the converter + , and that will still clip in the same way whether you are using a seperate channel strip or not! If you mean clippping as in a channel strip plug-in clipping inside the box then thats just a case of turning down of course! However, if you are WANTING clipping but want it to happen analog for the more musical sound then I...

Don't use a comp when tracking. You want to hear as much nuance as possible so you're better served by trying to be consistent without it, then adding a LITTLE compression as needed in mixdown. Time based effects, with all due respect to SA, sometimes it's necessary to track with them. I once recorded a song with delay on it, and though the engineer had a ton of delays that cost way more than my Boss ME-3 multi, he told me to go...

ART is usually good value for money. Presonus is another brand to look at in the lower price points. Also, occasionally I'll see a Summit TD-100 used for under $400, and it would be perfect for you.

I think that for someone like me who owns a small powered mixer PA and the band mixes from stage, it would be a cool thing. When a bigger PA and a dedicated sound guy are available I'd leave it out.

if you can get that up to about 300, the blue bluebird is great for both.
its a budget mic, but it sounds pretty good on most things. a little bright
for some guitars, but i always put it in the back of an open back cab and
it sounds great. a little scooped for bass, but if you're into that its
golden. drum overhead, room mic, kick drum. ive used it on just about
everything.

Lots of threads on these devices. I still enjoy my trusty M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 (the new one is called the MicroTrack II). However, were I buying today, I'd more strongly consider one of the Zoom units - H2 or H4.

This is just my opinion:
1) It sounds like the rhythm guitar is is right next to the mic and the lead is further away - should be more balanced.
2) The vocals are a little too "middy".
3) The whole mix is kinda muddy - need to bump the overall highs up a little.

I have seen U5s sell used on ebay for $375.00-$400 with shipping included in some cases. Search the completed listings to get an idea of what people are actually paying.
Not sure if there is another DI with the exact same features as the U5. Which features of the U5 are important to you and which could you do without?

Some sound cards will feed from line in to headphone out, so that might be
worth a try. Otherwise all you'll need is a cheap 2-channel mixer.

Sounds like you have the buffers size set too low, so the computer is working too hard and dropping samples, causing clicks.
If so its not a software thing, its a hardware one, so it will be the same for all programs! You'll need to find the control panel for your hardware and set the buffer size higher, whats your interface?
If its not that, then it could be a number of problems, but ...

I had a Firebox for a while. The sound quality was good, the gain was sufficient, and the features/functions were just what I needed. It had two negatives: 1) it ran hot--I mean really hot. I was worried I'd forgetfully put something on top of it that would get damaged by the heat. 2) there were some mystery crackling noises that showed up randomly and then went away for a few days and then ...

Absolutely at a loss. Here sit with my Firepod... on, Reaper... open, and my bass on my lap, and I have no idea what to do next. I see nothing on my Reaper screen that shows my device as an option. Can anyone tell me where to look? The Firebox instructions prompt me to go to the device manager in my Cubase LE program, but I don't have that program. Performed countless searches...........

I've been recording on my computer for a few years now, and although I wouldn't consider myself an expert, I've attained some knowledge (usually by making mistakes).
First off, as far as I know there is no such thing as a MIDI > USB cable or converter, and even if there was one, it wouldn't do what you're thinking it would. MIDI, simply put, is "information" that you send from one device to...

Those are great units, not too hard to use IME. I did a bunch of 4-track recordings with one, during a summer when I was stationed at a fire tower. (No, they're not out on Verve. )
If you can get it for fairly cheap, it would be a great investment as a practice aid IMO - you could program in all kinds of different patterns to play along to (waltz, tumbao, 5/4, etc...)
I'm not a MIDI ...

Top sound engineer Mike Stavrou makes a statement that all top ten hits of the past and to the present, share five things in common....but does not reveal them, he just leaves you to think it through for yourself. Now bearing in mind all the genres, technology, artist, styles, etc, this list should incorporate all...
