Incidentally, I tried to exchanged my money from at China Trust the other day, the moment they told me that will charge an additional $300NT for $400 US as part of the transaction fee, I said no thanks and left. Well all banks charge a fee to send T/T's...

Absolutely - I opened my account with 10K US$ and then put the lot into (cough) Citibank stock last December.....never said I get everything right! If you have less than 10K investing directly in T-bills may not be the smartest move IMHO.

I never got charged extra on my credit cards in the UK cause I was in Europe or the US, not that I can remember anyhow. No, most of us are indeed not charged on our overseas cards as exchange rates and yearly fee’s make up for that. In Taiwan, where the majority of locals has 5 to 10 credit cards, each one benefitting of free...

Business plan not needed?
Published (2009-12-28 10:28:00)
http://blog.asmartbear.com/business-plan.html The above is titled Don't Write a Business Plan and I think it makes some very good points. I saw tons of stuff about writing a business plan when I started and how important it supposedly was. But most of that turned out to be questionable. Contrary to most advice, I made a simple one year plan based on prices and the number of clients needed at that price to become profitable. I then made...

Business plan not needed?

The problem I see with most business plans is that they are too rosy and fail to take in account for bad things. What do you do if you your business is losing money or if your business is only breaking even? What's your exit strategy? Businesses fail enough or are stopped for any number of reasons and having an orderly plan in place can be crucial for you to get through a rough period like that. There's also the simple fact that you...

Thanks much for the speedy replies. I have an APRC, not work connected, plus a Foreigner's Work Permit from six years ago (with no expiry date that I can see), so I think I am covered to compete in the open market. Hope so anyway. Thanks for the tips, Fox. I see now that I could have been much better organized. Kind of got badgered into the job.

<<Posted this in business directory by mistake, feel free to remove that double-posting>> I just wanted to share my experience with Enspyre. I started using their telephone answering service a couple of months ago, and if you are a business struggling to keep up with calls or just wanting to free up some time to do other things whilst staying professional, I highly recommend you look into the services offered by...

It's too slow, for sure. More than one month is a long time in Taiwan. Even many corporations bill each other here on a monthly cycle. Next time you do freelance editing, make sure you specify the time. BTW, are you cleared on your ARC to do this editing? If they paid tax on your behalf, and their name isn't on your ARC, you could have trouble getting another work permit. FYI.

I think it depends on what type of business you are in. If you're in a conventional bricks and mortar type business with fixed costs, then yes I'm sure it pays to have a plan on how many customers you will need and how you plan to get them, just to break even. Web businesses that have much lower costs however are harder to predict, and you pretty much have to go with the flow. Having said that...

The tax office and NIA will definitely say it is a no-no, but if the company doesn't report paying out to you or pays into a foreign acct controlled by you then I can't see them being able to prove anything as long as you stick to the story: "I have never worked in Taiwan." Working is definitely against the terms of your visa, so yes it is illegal to answer your initial query.

Hmmm....very interesting. My 0.02 is that there are a lot of savers in Taiwan that get a lot of crap advice, (mabe not just Taiwan). These savers also have very unrealistic expectations of risk/reward, (not that we haven't seen that elsewhere either), and don't necessarily want to hear that they can't earn double-digit risk free returns year after year. It's possible that there is a niche ...

You're talking about a form of technical analysis. Timing the market doesn't work.
