I think I know where I went wrong, I got 4 new tiels a couple of days ago and didn't have a choice so put them in the same cage and I think thats when things went wrong, I've taken the little sick ones out and will keep an eye on the others if they arn't being fed i'll pull em and hope for the best i suppose, their crops were quite empty. I'll see if i can get pics to put up

I assumed she was through laying eggs so I put her back in the drawer. She promptly laid an egg. Is she holding them in until she's placed in the drawer? Will this hurt her? She bled a little bit after she laid this egg, but not with any of the others- even her first. I'm afraid that she won't lay until she is in the drawer and hold it in until she hurts herself. Is that possible?...

nesting boxes

I know that you already took the nest boxes out, but I wanted to mention that you bird did not become egg-bound because she didn't have a place to lay. Just in case that is your main concern. They become egg-bound either because of genetics, or because of a lack of calcium in their diet.

thanks, yeh i know that not providing a nest box didn't cause her to be egg bound. last winter was just a stressful time with the visits to the vet and all; for Lacey, Munson and us. Lacey actually laid two clutches just fine after several Lupron injections. i was sure that the first wouldn't hatch because of the Luron. followed advice here, didn't remove the eggs because posts stated that she would just lay more to replace the...

Severe feather plucking

Google/Yahoo are your friend. There's more information out there than you can read in a week about how to set up and heat a brooder for young chicks being hand fed. I use a 10 gallon fish tank with 2-3 inches of Aspen shavings in the bottom to retain heat, covered with paper towels. I use Brooder lids I buy online from Avitec at http://www.avitec.com/Aquarium-Top-Brooders-s/17.htm . Obviously not everyone wants to, or even can afford this...

Cockatiel won't drop egg?
Published (2009-11-18 16:48:00)
Quote: Obviously, if I didn't care about her health, I wouldn't care about taking her eggs away or about her continuing to lay eggs! You should take the eggs away, you should try to deter her from laying more. You should find alternate methods of quieting your bird down, shoving her in a drawer is NOT doing the "best by her". I do not think there is any excuse for that sort of action. I doubt she will hold off to...

They prefer to wait until they feel "safe" to lay, and in this case she's decided her "nest" is in the drawer, not her cage. Can you let her sit on her eggs, in the drawer, for a few hours a day? You're right, I think - if you keep taking her eggs away from the "nest," she's going to keep replacing the ones that got "lost."

Rhonda ... cockatiels can be very aggressive of their nest box. If they are not bonded - they will fight the other cockatiels - male or female - to keep them out of their box.
I would recommend not hanging the nest boxes and separating your males and females.
