The problem wasn't between Jack and Kate. Kate chose to make it an issue, and then Jack chose later to forget his issues for Kate. There was a problem between Jack and Kate the minute Sawyer made his sacrifice. Watch that scene again and take a look at the look Kate gives Jack when Frank asks if anyone else would like to jump.
