i think that yelling, just like spanking, has its time and place in parenting. i dont see anything wrong with a quick shout to deter dangerous behavior. but when the yelling is constant, just like when spanking is constant, it can be a problem and become ineffective, possibly abusive. we are always told to never spank out of anger, but how often are we told not to yell at our kids when we are angry? good example: as a Girl Scout leader, i have...

Dr Ferber, the guy who is credited with CIO, defines it like this: Quote: He [Dr. Ferber] recommends following a warm, loving bedtime routine and then putting your baby in bed awake and leaving him (even if he cries) for gradually longer periods of time. Putting a child to bed awake, says Ferber, is crucial to successfully teaching him to go to sleep on his own. Parents are instructed to pat and comfort their baby after each predetermined...

Quote: To elaborate, I will never let my child cry alone for any reason or any length of time, whatever hour of the day or night, if they cannot talk or sign. Andrea's definition of CIO seems to be different so it's hard to know what the definition is when debating it. If, after trying everything, they seem unresponsive, I using my learned mommy reading skills, realize that 1) they are overstimulated and need less touch 2) they are...

Jennifer, you are so sweet! Thank you for being so wonderful about this whole debate. I know it must be hard for you, especially as we are all friends Elizabeth, I understand what you mean about just wanting the same legal rights as the rest of the country. If there were a way of doing that without "marriage" per say, I'd be okay with that. However, I still can't be okay with two women or two men bringing children...

What do you all consider CIO? I feel like the people who don't CIO think that CIO is letting your child scream and cry for endless amounts of time. Those who I know who do CIO, myself included, tend to go in and calm the baby at predetermined intervals. I will also add that I know the difference between the I'm tired cry and the "My leg is caught in the crib" cry.

Is Shouting the New Spanking?
Published (2009-11-06 17:15:00)
I am a yeller and not proud of that...my yelling has started getting beyond what I am comfortable with again. I actually looked up the therapist Cameron had been going to and called her today to see if we could reconnect and do family therapy. Me and the boys. I feel as they are getting older I am needing some help to better understand them and myself. I want a better way of communicating and honestly I really liked her.

Welcome Junnie!
First of all, are you trying to start a reasonable debate or get on a soap box? The wording of your debate seems to indicate the latter.
Secondly, I did not do CIO until my DD was over 12 months. However my way is not the only way. You cant argue with results I say. If a child who has CIO since day one is happy, bright and healthy who am I to argue with that. I personally ...

I totally agree. I hate when I yell. I hate to hear other parents yell.
I find it to be ineffective. Sometimes it gets my child's attention, but I would rather do it in a more productive way. I only yell out of anger. I hate to do anything out of anger. It makes me feel guilty when I yell.
I have taken to growling when I am angry. I don't think it is much better.
When I can, I ...

I think if a couple believes they are capable of caring for a child, and they want to be parents, then they should. Lack of money is not high on my list of reasons not to have children, actually. (I'd be a hypocrite otherwise )

How horrible for that mother.
ANY procedure done to a child should need BOTH signatures of the parents. No one parent should be allowed to make a choice that cannot be undone that the other parent may not want.
