mossberg 500a vs rem 870
Published (2009-11-25 18:44:00)
Run of the mill Mossberg 500 combo (28" vented rib barrel and a 20" HD barrel) is found very easily on sale in my area (Western WA) for $229-259 so $350 is steep, unless we are talking some special models. Between the 2 the Mossy 500 has the advantage of being capable of shooting 3" shells....none of them is a collector item anyway and ulikely to appreciate so I would go for the practicality of the 500.

For under 1,000, look for a used Ugartechea (Uggie) on sites like gunsinternational.com. You MIGHT be able to find an older AyA (as in 50's, 60's, or 70's) http://www.gunsinternational.com/Par...n_id=100106855 http://www.gunsinternational.com/Uga...n_id=100106411 (this is a 20) http://www.gunsinternational.com/AYA...n_id=100106857 nice AyA but double your budget - (just for comparison)...

3" vs 3.5" for waterfoul

I can't count how many times I've laid BB steel on a goose at 40-50 yards, watched feathers fly off, heard the "blap" of the hit, seen him bounce 5 yards higher, and fly on. Probably died somewhere down the road, didn't see him fall, though. Ts or BB hevi shot will shoot right through 'em at 40, leave and exit wound, and knock 'em dead at 60. I got serious and quit playing with BB guns. Since hevi...

870 vs. 1187
Published (2009-11-25 23:30:00)
I have been shooting 1100s and/or 11-87s for 46 years and haven't lost an "O" ring yet. Yes, at $4 for 6 I do have some spares. They do not move in service. The only way they get damaged is taking them off over the magazine threads during cleaning. The other main cause of "failure" is getting 'O' rings that are not resistant to petroleum products, and they dissolve/deteriorate. Viton or...

If you're seriously considering going the NFA route with it, spend the money it takes to get a 'brand name' gun to start with. Doesn't mean you can't find a good used 'big name' shotgun that isn't overly expensive, but IMHO you'd be better off spending all that NFA money on a platform that gives you a better chance of getting your $$ back later, if you ever decide to part with it. fwiw, lpl

I have a old single shot 12 with a damaged barrel, busted firing pin and totally wrecked finish. I was able to cut the damaged part off the barrel and since I was cutting I took it 18 1/2 inches then I just flat blacked it for now. Managed to fab a good firing pin. The length of my hallway is 6 paces, the 00 pattern from my "project" is between 6 and 7 inches at that distance a bit bigger spread with #4. Flying ashtray? Heck...

I don't know of any reduced recoil 00 loads that are sold as "long range."
The 8 pellet Winchester 00 loads might be right up your alley. Dicks sells them for $4 for 5.

Why not just buy a new Maverick? They can be had for under your $200 price tag and already are ready for home defense.

Hey pikid89, I'm guessing you stumbled on this thread by searching? Nothing wrong with that at all but did you notice the last time someone posted in this thread was three years ago. You may not get a quick response back from them.
Read sm's post, he knows what he is talking about. Take care to get a good cheek wield and get it into your shoulder pocket and the recoil won't be that bad.

They didn't penetrate a half inch of plywood ?
Something is very wrong there. I once put a cheap winchester foster slug through 3 inches of hard pine, and through a 2.5inch thick brick behind it. No penetration problems there at all.

If you couldn't even find blood, I'd say that you missed, no matter what you think to the contrary.

like this:

you can also get pre made prism shaped boxes for free at the post office but they may need to be modified to fit your barrel

No.
If you want to hit what you shoot at, and follow up with fast additional shots, a stock is absolutely necessary.
I think a pistol-grip shotguns practical applications are door opening by SWAT & Military using breaching rounds, TV & Movie action shows, and of course, fantasy video games.

I voted for the 870 because I think either will be waaaaay more than one would ever really need for true home defense, and you can pick up an 870 quite a bit cheaper.

the first time I ever shot .410GA it was through one of these...and it was old and working fine...I don't think you'll have ANY problems with this simple designed shotgun...I have my Dad's Stevens single shot 12GA from the mid 1950s and it still works and looks new...good luck with yours but I think you'll be fine...

I use 3" Brenneke slugs from my slug gun but otherwise I don't have any use for them. I read somewhere either on this site or another where they were discussing 3" shells and up. In short, there was a trade off on going to longer shells. If I recall right, the increased distance when shooting steel from a 3" or 3.5" forced a trade-off of less shot per shell.

Maybe a clamp on the muzzle to which a tritium sight can be fitted and which can be removed for hunting or shotgun games?
One response will probably be that you don't need sights, just point as a shotgun blast will cover a whole room. Don't listen to that nonsense! At the distance across an average room, the spread of a hunting shotgun will be around 3 inches - better than a single bullet,...

The Ithaca 37 is very simple to take down and lube. Slide the action back. Screw IN the magazine tube nut a couple of turns. Give the barrel a half twist counterclockwise. That's about it. You can clean and lube most everything at this point. I have a full PDF of the manual, PM me if you want a copy.

"This can cause misalignment of the sabot on the slug, thus causing a serious pressure problem as well as poor accuracy."
Seems clear enough to me. Just because it hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean it can't happen.
