I would check the bore (for sharp, shiny rifling) and take it to a smith to have him check headspace and overall function...then if given a passing grade...fire away. If it is found to be in poor condition...it is my opinion that you should sell it. __________________ If you ever NEED more than three or four mags: You ain't short of mags, you're short of people on your side of the argument. -Art Eatman

The other Charles Daly firearms and their AR-15s are pretty much on two different planets. Charles Daly did lots of research with the pros and set out to build a very high quality weapon (wheras the rest of their lineup is lower priced, imported firearms)....

You JUSTIN have absolutely no proof the shooter was shooting at 420 yards. There is absolutley no proof whatsoever. No camera shots included the shooter and target when he was shooting. You are a "Koolaid" drinker. You viewed a shooter. A target range, and other camera shots which did not include simultaneous viewpoints of nothing but what was crafted to make you believe he was shooting a 420 yard target at 420 yards with a...

Scope options for a Rem 597..built-in rails or "classic" scope base?? So far I had very good results with my 597 with the scope mounted on the standard receiver rails. However, the rifle has drilled holes if you want to install a classic "big rifle" scope base. What is your preference?? Do you think a base would improve results?? I think, by logic, it could be worse because you add another piece between...

A standard Ciener bolt/magazine combo doesn't have LSHO, so you'd better be able to dry-fire it. I wouldn't dry-fire it for fun, but that's true of any gun IMO. If you really are worried about it, Black Dog magazines offer LSHO, but I find the Ciener mag to be more pleasant to load (there's a simple mod for the Black Dog using a string but I haven't done it to mine). __________________ TANSTAAFL If fifty million...

Nice gun. It hurts to shoot a lot though. How far away are the hogs you are shooting? I would not scope it if less than 100 yards. I think scopes on lever actions are super-cheesey.

Do a search in this forum, and you'll drag back a bunch of details. The thumbnail version is that you need to check the gap between the rear of the bolt and the bolt carrier. There are very specific dimensions for this gap, and deviations from that spec can imply significant issues. You also need to make sure that the gap measurement is real and not faked via grinding the rear of ...

If your on a budget you might want to check out a saiga in .308. You can probably get one in the 500-600 range. I have not had experience with them, but I know some happy customers that have them. I myself prefer the Fal and they can be had for a decent price these days.

Good call on the added weight! I've got a heavy barrel Savage with a bunch of lead shot epoxied into the stock. It too weighs about 18 pounds. Sure lends to pleasurable shooting! That, and, I LOVE handing it to folks and seeing the looks on their faces! Kind of reminds me that I'm younger than I think I am!

If your (modern/post-war) rifle gets damaged by dry firing it's a poorly designed rifle and needed to get sold anyway.

Just two more suggestions. First, if your eyes are as bad as mine and you just see a gray blob on top of the barrel, consider a red dot or scope. Second, if you have room to practice at home, try dry firing at a target that is reduced in size for the range you are dry firing. It can be done at 10 feet succesfully if you reduce the size of the bull. Be sure to use a dummy round since 22s can be...

I can only tell you my experience -
Optics are allowed. Part of the Appleseed training I received, however, is how to correctly use military-style aperture sights. In fact, most of the shooters at my Appleseed were using scoped 10/22s. I shot the first day with a 10/22 with Tech-Sights, and the 2nd day with a scoped 10/22. My scores didn't change much; the only advantage...

how much accuracy do you expect over what kind of ranges?
AMMO
Handloads or factory ammo?
There are many more match grade choices for the 308 for factory loads.
If you handload there isn't anything the 308 can do that 30/06 can't do better
The same Reasoning also applies to rifle selection for custom vs off the shelf rifles

oh, it's worse than that... 6 mph is a slow jogging speed for a human... i.e. a 10 minute mile, more like a fast walk. " running" deer are way faster and unlike humans that keep their torso mostly stationary, deer tend to jump a lot which means you're likely off in two directions
i'm not much of a hunter, but i'd have to be pretty dang hungry to take a shot at a running deer

Seriously if .5 moa from a stock savage isn't good enough all you need to do is order a SSS recoil lug $40 and send the friendly folks at Shilen about $335
no need to buy a $1500 rifle that may or may not shoot better than what you have now

There is no difference, there is a difference
The differences are slight and in most firearms it won't matter. In semi auto's you need to watch headspace.
I'll just repost what Walt Kulek over at Fulton Armory says about it:

I don't know the details of this failure but it could be ammo related for all I know.
