A well diversified rifle collection MUST include the following calibers: - 22 LR, ultra cheap ammo and fun to shoot - 223, minor centerfire for serious varminting, relatively inexpensive centerfire range use - 7,62X39 or a 30-30...A mid power 30 Cal for deer hunting and range use easy on the shoulder and on the wallet - 30-06....A full power 30 cal. capable of taking anything in North America and venturing in long range shooting...ammo found...

I'd be interested to hear too - I was thinking of possibly getting one. But at that price, it had better be good!

Question about 1894c and reloading
Published (2009-11-04 09:53:00)
Kernel- That might be the source of the rumor, but it's hard to imagine a gun new enough to be chambered in .357 that could possibly have this problem with a revolver cartridge. Even the Magnums don't run rifle pressures, and the 1894 in .357 would have to be from the 1970s or newer. The .357 has a maximum pressure of 35,000 PSI, vs. 42,000 for ancient .30-30 rifle cartridge, 43,500 for the recent .450 Marlin and 44,000 for the .444....

Your not going to get the crosshair on the same point as what your seeing through the barrel at 20 feet! You don't have that much scope adjustment! Stretch out to 50y at least and try it. Also, is that mount for a square bridge Savage or a round top Savage? You may have a mount for a round top on that square bridge....

I clean all my centerfire arms after shooting so corrosive ammo is a non-issue. If one buys cheap, and stacks deep, you never have to worry about supply of a given caliber. Are you telling me the price on the website is not the actual selling price? If I try to order right now...

The market is tanking on ARs right now. The election created an artificial demand and a lot of people purchased them at inflated costs while dealers ordered them by the bushel. Now the manufacturers are catching up and dealers have more than they can move. The people who purchased a bunch of them are selling some of them off to recoup some of the cost and it has killed the market and value. I have seen Colt 6920s go for around 1K which is...

Quote: If one buys cheap, and stacks deep, you never have to worry about supply of a given caliber. That's what I thought, last year. I don't think that I can buy enough 5.45 to last me my lifetime, and I'm not trusting the current batch o' CongressCritters to NOT try to muck with the importation of cheap Russian ammo somewhere down the road. The nice thing about 7.62x39 (or 308 or 223) is that I can get the chambering in a...

between the 2 you're looking at and your stated useage, i'd go with the .308...why put up with more recoil than you have to. i would personally look at something with even lighter recoil and a proven track record on elk...bearing in mind that lighter recoil also means that you can go with a light rifle, which would help on the hiking too. i think the optimum chambering would be a 6.5x55mm (...

Not an expert, but yes, it should be. I would however get some other opinions before starting as i had a buddy do this for my 77/17 and within 2 months, the stock warped causing it to shoot even worse than before...i no longer own a .17HMR. (maybe it should have been coated?) But, before you "pull the trigger" on this idea, what do you mean "help"? if you haven't shot it @ anything ...

Those are great rifles! I really like mine. Be sure to check under the buttplate to see if there is the little slip of paper with the Swiss soldier's name and town that was issued the rifle. Here is a website with manufacturing dates by serial number; http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/schmidt....html#conte nts Enjoy that K-31! Steve

sounds like the round to me. i have a load for a .30-06 that is only 1 grain of 4350 less and shoots almost 2.5 ft lower. barrel harmonics dont play! i would try a different round. one of the gurus may correct me but i have found that in this situation you need to use a hotter load to stabilize.

Of the 2 choices,i'd take a x39 due to ammo cost. What Saiga would I get today? A 5.45x39 Century has ammo for $120 for 1080.

FAL-clones from various sources (DSA is a good one). G3 clones from various sources (PTR-91 is probably the best option going on that front). M14 clones from various sources (Springfield M1A is the most common). CETME clones, though these can be real hit and miss because of the companies that built them. Any of those is worth a look. I believe there are others out there if ...

Quote: I know that sounds like a .45-70 but I’d rather stick to calibers that will be easier to load subsonic. With just a quick look in one of my manuals there were 3 loads that would be subsonic. The .338 Lapua is a humongous round with way more power than most people need or can control. The .338 Winchester is as powerful as you need for any critter in North America, at least. Generally speaking, the .338 Winchester is about equal to the .375 H&H and shoots a bit flatter. The .30-06 is generally considered the most powerful round the average man can be trained to shoot well....
