.17hmr too much for squirrel?
Published (2009-11-27 23:56:00)
The idea is to get to EAT the squirrel. You might not be able to make a head shot. Don't take a .300 win mag to kill one of the things, ya kow. My old pump up Benjamin took a many of 'em when I was a kid before I got my first .22.

How Far is Too Far? - Page 2 - THR

Quote: 5 years or so ago, I was encouraged by the landowner to take a 350 yd shot & gut-shot a young buck. He dropped at the shot. As I approached him, I was greeted with 18" or so of entrails hanging out of the animal; He was alert, sitting up, unable to stand. Had to finish him with a .38, he just sat there staring at me for that shot. Not a good afternoon. I limit myself to more manageable distances now. __________________...

How Far is Too Far?

Quote: Most people wouldn't know 200 yards in the woods if it bit them on the buttocks. I have paced off many a "500-yard" shot that turned out to be around 150 yards. LOL In country with a lot of canyons and ridges, it's really hard, too, even if you can see a long distance. I hike around with a rangefinder occasionally, for practice. Sometimes I can guess within 10 yards. Sometimes, I'm WAY off. The human...

.45 ACP Nay-sayers. . .
Published (2009-11-24 15:51:00)
Nice report; thanks and good shot; My hunting partner discovered this weekend that the following is ALSO effective at dropping a deer (in this case, not taking a step): .280 Remington, Hornady factory ammo with 139 gr SST, slight downward angle and almost broadside, with a very slight quartering toward, with head to the right: Bullet enters right cheek, above jaw line, below and in front of right ear (horribly bad shot; aiming for lungs );...

MCgunner the problem with your posts from my point of view isn't that you want to manage wildlife properly. It's that you sent the message to someone reading them that if you don't agree with the law, you don't follow it. You might be a great guy. I don't know. I do know there are a lot of hunters who aren't and they would take your posts where you said you think the law is stupid so SSS as re-enforcement for...

30-30 VS. .44 Magnum - Page 2 - THR
Published (2009-11-27 05:01:00)
Quote: I could only load one round at a time, but that's all I think I'd need given the opportunity. You no longer have this problem with the leverevolution bullets now available separately as components...however, technically, loaded with traditional spitzer bullets, a 30-30 lever is a 2 shots rifle (one in the chamber and one in the magazine), not single shot...

Quote: What I'm questioning is your allegation that the projectile did not penetrate further than the skin AND was going "~500 fps". John, I will finish this argument by saying that my dog was shot with a pellet gun going ~500fps ("~" means approximately btw), and very minimal damage was observed. I saw that the pellet was lodged just under the skin. If this doesn't coincide with what your experts...

So..what is to keep the shooter from going back and claiming the hog? He is still in the area so technically has he "abandoned" the kill? All he has to tell FWC is that he went to get help in carrying his kill out.

Got the smaller one dressed and found a nice neat hole right thru the lungs.
You don't want a nice neat hole. You want the "boiler" destroyed. Sounds like you aren't using the right ammo if the first ran a 1/4 mile.
If you are going to use an AK use the right ammo.

I think good marksmanship and knowledge of your firearm and its ballistics is awesome; however, what I gather from members of this site is that for the majority of hunters, anything over 200 yards or so is too far. Also, magnum calibers are difficult for many people to shoot accurately, and so the majority of hunters should strive to place their shots with a rifle they can shoot ...

I can see both sides of this argument. I would like to point out that most serial killers start out on dogs cats etc. So If you take joy in popping puppies do us all a favor and get your head examined. If I am wrong let me know. But I am not.
I'd like to also point out that my neighbor killed my pet ducks when I was kid. He threw their carcasses back on my property when he was done. I buried...

I would say the prime habitat of the Elk is probably the reason for many 400-500 yd shots. Take a range finder into the hills and see how often that distance shows up when looking across canyons and such. Many will promote a stalk but depending on terrain and the wind (always the wind) it may be very hard to approch especially from below.
Archery season is the time to hunt them close up, there ...

guess i don't really care what you shoot your deer w/ but as a ' public safety message' it should be noted a 45 acp is not legal in all states (s.d. for one) due to inadequate energy.
congrats on your kill - enjoy!

No doubt, another .30-30 vote here. Not that the .44 won't do the job to 100 yards, but it's falling off pretty quick at 150 wih that low BC. Leverlution makes the .30-30 a runaway.
I load the .30-30 to 2100 fps with a 150 Nosler BT in a 12" contender pistol. It's carrying over 1000 ft lbs at 200 yards and shoots flat enough to zero at 200. The .30-30 is superior as a deer hunting round ...

Several things.
If the property line is not fenced, I'd put a No Trespassing sign on the line. Maybe several.
I'd contact the owner of the adjoining property, asking him about authorized hunters and telling him about the stand and its focus on your land.
I'd do some hunting nearby, with trees as protective cover, and keep an eye on the stand for activity. I'd have a camera handy....
