FTF Question - what am I missing?
Published (2009-11-12 13:25:00)
Still, the SIG P6 in question is a German gun, made for German police & military, using FMJ-RN ammo. American Sporting Arms & Ammunition Manufactures Institute (SAAMI) specs didn't have anything to do with the chamber or leade dimensions. I'm here to tell you they have a shorter then normal leade, and TC or HP bullets with a longer full diameter extending past the case mouth have to be seated shorter to chamber in...

Working up a load?
Published (2009-11-12 12:41:00)
Cool, thanks for all the info. So my plan now is just to work up a safe/reliable load while I work on my accuracy. Once my accuracy is better I can start refining my load for accuracy.

I use homemade case lube just to make it easier to feed the progressive even with carbide dies. It takes hardly any extra time to lube them and the smoothness of the operation is worth it. However, you should try it both ways and decide which way you like best.

Yes, there was resistance when seating. Fired five of the above rounds today and all went well, the only difference between them and the factory rounds was that nice cloud of lead dust

Been using them (Mastercast of PA) since 1991 when I don't feel like casting my own, and I have always been happy with the product and price. Mike makes a good product, and I always feel like a welcomed guest when I visit his operation. Can't speak of shipping times since I buy them in person.

I have used a few thousand for IDPA matches with clays. No feeding problems and lighter recoil for a faster recovery. I like most of there bullets and love there customer service.

Welcome to THR, mikez104 .
Accurate lists 4.0gr start and the max is 4.6gr for AA#2 and a 124gr laser cast rn.
Here's Accurate's load data in pdf. It'll take a minute to load.

I would sort out the mixed cases and use all of the same brand for accuracy testing.
Remington & Winchester cases have different capacity, and the result will be different pressure with identical powder charges.
None of the trimming, and OAL measuring you have done, or different powder will make much differance with mixed case brands throwing you a curve ball.

If they won't go in the chamber, they won't shoot.
It looks like you need some taper crimp on the case, at least eliminate the flare or close it down SLIGHTLY.
If you stuck a bullet in the rifling, the OAL is too long. Seat the bullets and crimp to where the round will chamber FREELY and extract in one piece.
Yes, shorter OAL will reduce working volume in the case and increase ...

Lubricating cases. Necessary for Pistols?

Benchrest Primer book had article on AR with 69gr SMK in Wylde chambered long barreled rifle.
H322 was one of the better powders in the list. The article is somewhat old and didn't have Varget or VV powders.
I use AA2230, R15, and Varget for 69gr SMK and 75gr Hornady BTHP. I like AA2230 because it is easy to measure, cheap and made some very consistent loads. 23gr for any of the these ...

Looks OK to me, but that photo is HUGE! I couldn't wait for it to complete downloading, so I'm just squinting at the little one. FWIW - I use the Lee FCD on everything I load, but I'm also a neophyte compared to a lot of the long-time loaders here.

I built mine about 40 years ago out of 2"x4" & 2"x6" screwed & glued framing, with a laminated top out of doubled & glued 3/4" plywood.
I had just torn out some old kitchen cabinets and used the drawers from them under the top.
I have a big bench vice on one end, and reloading equipment on the other.
I've used a barrel vice in the bench vice to re-barrel several rifles and the bench is ...

Priming - noob question
So I finally have all the materials I need to start reloading.
I have a bunch of deprimed cases and what I'm wondering is, can I prime and let set?
In other words, can I prime a few hundred cases and then finish the loading at a later date? Say in a few days at most.
Or does this somehow "damage" ...

Hi,
First, what cartridge is this? I missed that.
Second, your variation in case length seems excessive, I agree. I use the simple Lee trimmer for .223 and 38 special. It works well. You turn until it no longer "bites" and the lengths are consistent within a thousandth or so.
If you have the Lee trimmer, I'd suggest you try it.
Remember the Lee bullet seater is going to set ...

alliant makes 2 good powders for loading cast slugs in 9mm. BullsEye and Red Dot (my favorite)
leading in the bore can be the result of undersize slugs or too soft a slug also - and too hard. I push 'em at about 1000 fps with very little leading, the slugs I buy from mike at 'mastercastbullets' shoot great in my 5906.

I personally use a Dillon 550 for .45acp, 10mm, .45LC, .357 Herrett, .204 Ruger, .223, .22-250 .25-06, 7mm Rem Mag, .45-70 & .45-90. Probably some I forgot.
