Nope. No drone whatsoever on mine. Drone has little to do with the muffler or pipe used, and almost everything to do with the location and angle of exit of the tailpipe itself.

Initially, the mileage... as I grew to know and love the car, the list got way longer. My pre-TDI impressions of diesel cars were shaped by an old MB diesel my Uncle had. The back end was constantly black w/soot and it got up to freeway speed in, well, mere minutes. Modern diesel technology is indeed amazing. For the first few months I kept looking for the 'down side'. Still looking 8 years later...

Fuel.
#2 ( Diesel) fuel is blended with #1 fuel to lower the temperature at which it starts to 'freeze' or gel into a thick syrupy mess that can't be pumped. This 'winterized' diesel has lower BTU content attributable to the #1 fuel.
The choice is lower mpg with a winterized liquid fuel, or walk because the car won't run on summer fuel.

Top the tank off, then go on a run at 60mph for 150 miles. Top the tank off and calculate you mileage.
I see that you got 26mpg (US gallon) which is 32.5mpg( imperial gallon). I always convert to mpg as a comparison to previous vehicles I owned BEFORE we switched to Liters and KPH.
eg. My '09TDI with DSG gets 51.5mpg(imp) on staight highway runs.
Yours is definitely low, unless you stuck...

We are a two car family and we get about 36 and 42 - 52 on the other (city highway) She who must be obeyed does not check her mileage very often.

sorry I can't help you, but I can't help but giggle at the diversity of people. Here you are thinking you want to lift your car to make it look tough while there is a whole other crowd the drops their car to look tough.
Beauty in the eye of the beholder eh!

Because the gas version felt sluggish.
Because I have driven diesels since I have been driving.
Because they use less fuel and I drive 100+ miles a day.
Because they have better driveability (fewer gear changes, less RPMs at speed, etc).

Any improvement would likely be so tiny that you would never recoup the
cost of the high-flow cat.

Automatic? Plenty of people get around 35 MPG with autos. There may be something wrong, but more of it has to do with how you drive and where you drive.
Was the fuel economy calculated at the pump, or are you just estimating?

I have used many different types including some of the supposedly higher quality ones. I found drastic inconsistencies between them all. Finally I settled on a snap-on brand with a dial indicator. I took it to work and compared it to the readings on our calibrated gauges and found it to be within a hair of their accuracy. The cheap ones work well in a pinch but to get my pressures correct I ...

What I've read elsewhere is that backing into a parking spot uses less fuel when the engine is warm (i.e. coming home at the end of your day) than backing up when the engine is cold. Probably a miniscule difference. But every little bit helps.
I say park how you like. I prefer to back into parking spaces because it's generally easier to back into a space than to back out of a space, and my ...
