Running EGR without coolant?
Published (2009-11-26 16:08:00)
I wonder if running the EGR cooler dry would cause failure of the joints inside the cooler due to too much heat from the exhaust. --Nate

I hit a 'rock' the other day. Well I thought it was a rock. Turned out it was a frigging boulder! Evolution Import saved the day. I figured I sail right over it; boy was I wrong. My wife looked at me and said "well that's what it's for."

You might want to check out the Power Enhancements forum. Also most of them upgrading do convert to the VR6 Clutch system. Easy swap I believe. Turbos are upgradable and Kerma Tunning Does the best job in the country for the TDI's I have been told. He is in Utah. He uses a chip tunning. Here you go. http://www.kermatdi.com/servlet/StoreFront

Not enough octane, eh? You need to find a new garage. They obviously don't know about Diesels. Open the cover under the back seat and remove the sending/pickup unit. It could be clogged. Maybe the check valve is binding. What sort of "bio-fuel" were you using? Actual bioDiesel or WVO? Where were you getting it from? Were you making it yourself?

ALH engines with the VE injection pump system started out with the 1998 New Beetle and the 1999.5 Jetta and Golf (I think). 2003 was the last year for that engine and that injection system. There were no ALH engines with a pumpe duse (PD) injection system. From 2004 there were 1.9-liter engines that were nearly identical to the the ALH engine, but the top end was all new. If someone says they have a 2003-or-older TDI with a PD engine, check...

I'd say a 90 amp would be okay in the south, but not the best up north.

We already have 4 "idling" threads.
Short answer, no... your TDI does not have the same requirements as a large diesel, especially with warm-up. You should let it idle for up to a minute before shutting down at highway rest stops and/or after a hard run to avoid coking the oil in the turbo from excessive heat.

I have no idea if this would be it: maybe the fuel collar is sticking on the pump plunger. Maybe a session with Lubromoly Diesel purge will help.

Wondering why " common rail" technology? Does anyone know why this isn't something else, like a Rotary Distributer Pump or Pump Duese? Must be the size of the engine, I don't know.

it all has to do with body types just like 1999 is A3 body type and 1999.5 is an A4 body type and the 2005 is still A4 body type but 2005.5 is A5 body type and now the 2010 are A6 body type.

Why not just get a remanufactured Bosch unit, the correct one, and be done with it? Seems like an awful lot of wasted time and energy chasing a used one.
The 1998 Jetta TDI as sold in the USA only had a 120A Bosch unit installed from the factory.

All the later cars will use the same style belt. You can usually tell if the belt was changed because the engine mount bolts will have been disturbed, and they generally have little paint dabs on them from the factory.
Chances are it has NOT been replaced, because people generally do not maintain a car, then trade it in.

I purchased a set of those tools a few months ago.... they work just fine.
You need to make sure the T50 (I've only used the 12 point 10mm bit) goes deeply into the Alt shaft. Sometimes, even with the dust cover on, crud can be in those splines/grooves.
What Alt do you have that uses the T50?
I also purchased the Lisle bit set to get the 10mm 12 point for mod purposes ...... take ...

the .658 with the hybrid and injectors isn't happy at 55mph in 5th.. The
.681 is probably the best choice overall for the way the car gets driven..
the stock gears are pretty much fine as well.. I've had 4 different ratios

of weight with all of them as well.. Right now I have the .717's in and the
car is pretty happy at ...

The bolts deform permanently when tightened. The rationale is simple:
-More consistent clamping force
-A given amount of clamping force can be achieved with fewer fasteners.
Don't reuse the deformed bolts. They're weakened and will break sooner or later. A lot of the one time use screws can be bought with better pricing as sets for a given application from the specialty parts dealers as ...

Wow, how long have you been running it with the wrong coolant?
I have a complete, turn-key rebuilt engine for that car for $2000 if you are interested. Early A2 1.6L solid lifter engine, same as what that car was born with. Pump, injectors, everything ready to go.
This pic was taken before the injectors and pump were put on:

There is only one oil pan choice for your car.

That has been the way the spedometer works in VWS for the last X years. X
might be the last 10 years. Ever since they stopped using a cable attached
to the transmission and the speedometer. Odometer is dead on with stock
tires. Everyone who runs a gps in their car makes the same observation. No
cure and it is not really a big deal. I know when my car says I am doing 75
in a 70 zone, I am safe ...

There's an air dam that before 2003 (2002?) could strike the inter cooler core. Leaks develop there pretty often. You can keep the intercooler from going bad by fixing up the air dam. It's easy to get to once the front bumper shell is off (also easy).
The turbos leak small amounts of oil as part of their nature. It's harmless, so your old unit was probably perfectly fine....

The EGR works at low engine speeds. Gasses are recirculated through the intake manifold and eventually clog it up. Just get in and drive; the diesel engine is more thermally efficient than a gas engine and thus needs to be under load to really warm up. Be mechanically sympathetic, however, and don't hammer on the turbo on those -20F mornings.
