I puttered in the garage most of the day today. I think I removed about 15lbs of wire that previous owners had added. In that mess was the aux. driving lights mounted in the lower grilles, the trailer brake setup, a remote starter, green leds that lit up the trunk and some stereo wiring that I'll never use. I heatshrinked all of the wires that were bared for the various installations. I reinstalled the pass front door panel. I remove the...

It is in the owners manual but basically, like most TDIs you change the oil every 10000 miles with 505.01 rated synthetic oil, fuel filter change at 30000 (although I do mine at 20000). If you can't find what you need, email me at dieseltdi at verizon dot net and I will let you know the complete maintenance for your mileage.

as someone in the same boat, if someone has a stereo installation that
looks nice and fits well with the stock trim (ie, black panel, red/blue
lighting) it would be awesome if you could post a photo!

Drill it.
Seriously. Drill the head off. Once that is done, you will have enough of the threaded section to grip with vice grips (will probably even come out by hand once the tension is removed. You can safely operate with four studs until you get a replacement.

You might consider PMing JasonTDI. I know that he used some kind of of
sound absorbing goop on his Jetta but I don't know whether or the degree to
which it helped.

__. This probably won't work but it might and it's free. Take the battery out, take it home, warm it up, and charge it fully. Then touch the battery cables together for about 12-15 seconds, re-install the battery (note: BE SURE that this is the order) and see if the immobilizer light is still on.

Since the trans has to come out, it is a good time to drain & refill the trans fluid with new. I have not heard of any slave cylinder problems. When you take it apart you should be able to see what is causing the problems you describe. My bet is that the problems will resolve with new clutch, pressure plate, and properly reassembled components. The DMF is likely near the end of it's life by now, ...

Check the connections on the battery itself, they may need a cleaning
and/or tightening.

Make certain there is only one o-ring on the cap and that it is in the right place on the cap. It sounds like the o-ring is in the wrong place.

I bought my A-3 (1998) in May of 2004. The odometer had about 175,000 showing. I paid $1,500 (I have the bill of sale).

Front & rear breaks
Timing-belt

Welcome to TDI Club. If you search the forums you will find that there are lots of issues with the heated seats on the A4 cars. IIRC, there is also a recall or TSB that VW issued on this matter that extends the warranty on the seat heaters to long after the normal warranty expires. You may want to contact your FLVWD and see if there is a recall or TSB and see if your car was ever ...

The 99.5 TDI has a well known history of "Difficault to start when warm".
To isolate this problem you can disconnect the engine temp sensor and then start the engine. The engine should start near instantly (after the glow plug (GP) duty cycle.
If your engine does start as I've discribed then your 99.5 TDI is in the same boat as many others. Your best fix is to have the car's ECU chipped.
