I finally got a chance to take it out and shake it down. It starts much easier now, doesn't buck and shudder as much for the first block or so, and seems to put out less overall smoke when pulling hard. It still smokes though, due to the Upsolute chip. It did seem to warm up a little faster, but that could have been me spanking it.

Davies, It looks normal to me. I assume it was an 87C thermostat. If so, your water temp is in the right ball park. The only way to read accurate water temp is to use vcds (was vag-com) to read what the ECM is actually reading. If it is a little high, with vcds readings, it couls mean there is a low water volume moving. This could indicate blockage in the radiator, or possibly a failing water pump. Just watch it closely for a while and see...

I think you can do it by removing the alternator, but I've never replaced the waterpump on a mk3 tdi before.

Great thread guys... I'm going to save it for future reference as my AFN TDI DoKa was experiencing similar symptoms prior to blowing all it's oil past the oil filter seal during a road-trip on I-75 near Findlay, OH.

I have a 1999 Jetta III 118,000 miles that I cannot get the ac cold. I tried adding freon at a idle and it does not seem to show any change to the gages. I'm not familiar with R134 systems. I have done all my work on R12 systems. The ac has never been touched since new and was wondering if I have the drier replaced, evacuate and recharge the system if that will solve my problem. Any suggestions ...

Hey everybody... Been a member for a while, but my original TDI "needs" got sidetracked by other distractions, so I've not really had the need to lurk/post until now... I bought my "dream" TDI powered vehicle this past June. It's a 1989 Transporter DoKa Syncro TriStar w/ an AFN TDI swap (supposedly from a 2001 European market Passat). The TDI has a few "enhancements" (injectors, a2w IC, chip...

As the recently new owner of a 96 Passat TDI, I thought I might welcome myself to the TDI Club with a few questions! First about my car - 260K miles, not a lot of info on previous repairs and mods, although the PO did tell me he replaced the 109 relay, and all the vaccum hoses. Also he had the intake mani. replaced w/ a new one, and the EGR valve vac. line is disconnected. Att his point I assume ...

The Heater stops working when there is not enough water flow to the Heater core.. This is usually do to LACK of water.. I do not think that the Water pump flows more or less due to total system pressure. (although it may flow more/less due to the amount of back pressure). If the only place it is leaking is the overflow and there is no water in the oil then I would definitely check the ...

Hi guys -- I'm going on a cross-country roadtrip in a month or so, and I'm interested to know how much fuel you guys think I can bring with me. I run my car on waste vegetable oil, which weighs about 35 lbs per 4.5 gallons. The real question is: What is the maximum cargo load I can carry in my car without harming the shocks, axle, etc. I want to be safe and reasonable. Last year I carried...

Frostheater problem - 5 new posts
Started 1 week, 4 days ago (2008-11-22 07:16:00)  by saturnhacker
I installed a frostheater in my girls 99 golf last year, worked great. Now it seems dead, ohm check across power plug shows open. Anyone have any experience with these units failing? Are they repairable? Not sure if I want to install a new one if this unit croaked after only a year. Any other heater options for the A4? Thanks for any input, and damn its cold !

My mechanic tells me I need new motors and regulators for the rear windows (which would explain why they're not working). He then quoted me a price for $300 for one motor and regulator, I believe. Does that price sound reasonable? I did find a regulator for $75 and a salvage yard parting out several Passats. I would like to know if I only need the two (motor and regulator) in order to fix ...
