For subfreezing temps a 0w-30 or 5w-30 is going to give you a small improvement in performance, cold starting and fuel efficiency, compared to 5w-40. TS

It won't. The dealer and VW just don't want any more liability. Just be sure the additive you use is ULSD-compliant. Most are. IMO, using an additive that increases lubricity, boosts cetane, and disperses water can only do good.

506.01 is 0w30. All VW/Audi, Opel and probably other German cars come with 5wXX in them, that's for sure*.
* At least in Europe.

Rather than a point, my question is whether or not it would be helpful to note in this thread that the new tdi has specific engine lube requirements and that few oil blenders yet have product that meets those requirements. We wouldn't ...

Meh fumes are everywhere. You aren't suppose to huff the diesel, gas or farts. But guess what....We all do.
I use Power Service all the time. I simple remove the foil as best I can, use my funnel in my filler and just pour approx 4 oz in. I do have a measuring cup; but I've been doing it for so long I know how much to pour without it.
I'd be more concerned with the gassers filling up ...

a couple of years ago I had a lifter ticking for a week in my PD. The ticking lasted for a week , low speed or high speed was still there.
Then it disappeared and never came back.

Just did the boss's first change on his new ('08) 6.4L Powerstroke. We had to send a case of oil back to the parts guys when they sent CI-4 in stead of CJ-4. I suppose it will take a while for people to realize there is a difference. Anyone know anything about Motocraft's SuperDuty 15w40? (Obviously it is the wrong viscocity and won't be 507.00 approved... though it does seem that there is a ...

The VW 507.00 spec lubes contain ~ 650 ppm of P and 800 ppm of Zn. So ZDDP is still the primary AW additive, though it may be supplimented with boron (which is ashless), or with Moly.
Note that the Zinc (along with Ca & Mg), contributes to the sulfated ash, hence the reduced levels....

I was stopping at one of my usual fillup places a couple days ago, and went over to check their diesel ULSD sticker . THe last time I checked, it was still LSD - couple days ago it was ULSD .
Anybody know what Sheetz is running (LSD / ULSD) ? I've been using them for my last couple tanks because (A) - pay at the pump, and (B) - now $.20 a gallon cheaper. Car runs fine on both...

How far would you drive for a cheap tank of fuel?
So I was driving home today and I got to thinking....
How far would I drive far a great price on a tank of fuel?
On my last car, I usually used the same station just because of convenience regardless of price. But then again I hardly ever got over 300 miles to the tank anyways.
So I pose this question to you:

Do you know if your car is under warranty or whether it's a concern for you?
A 2006MY Jetta diesel does not require 507.00 oil.

How old is the Beetle? The early A4's had a restriction in the fuel pick-up that was a natural place to catch any ice that may be in the system. As long as it is below freezing the car may not go...
There is a thread way back in the archives showing how to adjust the pick-up to fix the problem.

hutchmans's most recent UOA:
i don't know why the soot is at this level after only 10k miles. if you still have the original air filter in place you could try changing it. how many miles are on the current fill of 506.01? i'd stick with 10k OCIs until the soot drops a bit. your engine will still be wearing in for awhile, my guess is that the Fe level will drop in future UOAs.

How cold do winters get in Atlanta? Even if the fuel you buy locally isn't winterized, I wouldn't worry about it. According to Exxon's website: "Non-winterized diesel fuel will not generally cause problems as long as temperatures are at or above 10°F."
