I believe that the mind has a lot to do with it. Yes you need strength and a good stroke but the power of the mind should not be underestimated. And before any one says, I know that a 90 year old with a sharp mind will (well maybe should) not be able to swim quikcer than when they were 20.

I think you worry too much about suits and times you did as a youngster. Do you have all your pb's written down. Its doesnt hurt to try to beat them. When i started the lifeguard who recommended a club to me got re-enthused after over 10 years of not swimming. He broke every single PB withing a year. He had been doing more weights and stuff over that 10 years. If your shape has drastically changed it wont be possible, and like mentioned...

Yes, Jimbo, it most certainly is about technique as well as motivation. Think about high-jumpers. Until the time of Mr Fosbury, everyone did that scissor leg kick thing to get over the bar. Most top athletes would be better at that than an ordinary person would be with the Fosbury flop. But there's a limit to how far even a top athlete would be able to go with the old technique. Once the new technique was adopted by most high-jumpers, the...

Goggles last as long as they last.... If they are leaking from between the lens and the rubber then you need a new pair. If they are leaking because of the fit, well, then you either need to find a new pair or work out why they are leaking (i.e. if I forget to remove my moisturiser before swimming they tend to leak...or just for no apparent reason!).

It doesn't matter at all, we're amateurs and most of the time loosers (in races that is ). Competition is nice as long as you don't get furious about it. It's ok if you don't wear super duper suits. I wore my one and only FS jammer for several routes until they became useless. I now use regular jammers/briefs when swimming. They didn't even help me go faster actually, just gave me some ...

My very first thought is that you have probably mis-counted your 400, and actually only did 350, which would make your 400 something like 9:55... Sorry.
