Overlooking the fabulous Brighton Beach with nephew-in-law, and yes we (Bob) did add some bubble bath. See how bright it was on Christmas Day.

I think there is a limit for a pool swimmer pete. I think that limit is probably 23 or so. Go under that, and it just feels nasty. I havent forgotten the dose of cold shock that 21 pool gave me.

I'm going to experiment in the morning. The temp at my usual lake is about 15C. I could manage that sans wetsuit in the sea but I want to see whether or not I can manage the lake at the same temp. I'll report back in the morning, providing I haven't drowned!

Really? That's warmed up a lot then since end-July when I was out there (it was 14*C then, apart from very shallow areas) English Channel is 17*C at the mo.

Possibly increase the amount of zinc in your diet? I think that's linked to cramps.

Thanks for the heads up Pete. It did feel different in comparison to our other cold water swims. Although its only a dunk at 3.9 not a proper swim so i am not sure how much it counts! This weekend we will be taking another visit but i reckon it will be in the 4-5 bracket. Since its turned winter weve not once been out of our depth, the effect it has on muscles is unbelivable! How do you find swimming with your teather?

Yes - a pair of wetsuit boots. I wear boots and gloves (but no wetsuit ) when swimming outdoors during winter.
My boots are Gul 5mm titanium lined and they are very good.

River Weaver, Frodsham, today: 8.7C (47.7F) according to the digital thermo, while my pool thermometer recorded 10C.
The river was high but much calmer and I managed a leisurely 150m or so.
