I use the lathe found it easier and able to handle longer plugs. My drill press is table mount with large head [same as floor model but shorter ] I can only thru drill 5-6" max on it either way you can make due.

You can get various lengths of those silicon skirts so you could cut them to size. If your were thinking of using those off a breachway then they would work fine. They typically need some water moving over them to make them move right. I did some smaller sized ones (3/8 and 1/2 oz) for freshwater use. Liked a regular bucktail better for how I use jigs in freshwater. I would think you could do up something squid like with some silicon skirts...

Sharp tools are a must. Speed helps too. Also try taking less off, If you try to take too much off, this can happen.

Check out the Turncrafter Pro 1/2HP Midi Lathe. Do a google search. Its a really nice machine in my opinion. As for securing it, reinforcement really isnt necessary with the turncrafter. I just found them for a slightly higher price then the grizzly you found.

Home depot carries screen spline. Little difficult at first but once you get the hang of it, it does the job.
