Are you going to use some kind of Spey based techniques or overhead casting? I can see no reason why Skagit line would not be just fine with OH casting as long as you select lighter line than what is used with same rod with Skagit casts. There is definite joint between head and tip and it flexes because there are loops and also because head usually is heavier and thicker than the tip. It looks bit strange but it works. And it is easy to just...

TP and others, it was not my intent to insult anyone, over what they might consider for equipment. I was just offering my perspective on quality vs. cost, and trying to make the point that they are not necessarily linear, and that there are considerations to be taken into account relative to MSRP. Tagman, dhs made some god points. I believe that your introduction to the sports basics will help your wife and give her the confidence she needs to pursue the sport with passion. It is after all a subject we can all agree is a passion. The tight roll cast in very close quarters the slow lift of the line against the pull of water to put energy in the rod the quick haul as the line breaks the hold of the water and the matching haul as the line...

F1 if I said it was green, then you would just call it another colour... sad really, I wonder who you really represent So humid air is easier to punch a fly line through than clear crisp mountain air with almost no humidity..... lets just say interesting

Over lining - Page 2 - SurfTalk
Published (2008-11-28 16:52:00)
New to fly line selection! Why overline the whole 100+feet of line? For floating lines why wouldn't you just buy a line like a SA or Rio Redfish taper or Rio Clouser taper which would give you a heavier head and or a heavier first 30 feet ,but then keeps the other 60 to 70 feet of line lighter to help shoot line on longer casts? Or the Rio saltwater line with a head weight of 293 for an 8wt. And why not use Integrated shooting tapers for...

I was reading books by Lefty and he states that if you want to cast over 40 feet in the wind "go one line size smaller. For example, 8wt rod use a 7wt line. He also states that when casting under forty feet, go up a line size.I really don't want to spend a $120.00 to see if he right but, I was wondering if someone ever had the opportunity to try it.

I've read books about casting "tight loops" and "open loops" and what causes there shape. In viewing photos of the cast I notice that the good tight loops have a positive angle of attack(climbing loop). My question is what does the rod tip do in order to form a "negative angle (falling loop) of attack. I am not talking about a "Tailing Loop" where the top of the loop drops below the bottom of ...

I often read that people "prefer" to over line their rods by at least one line weight. I understand it (to some extent) in this "fast rod" age but if you consistently prefer to over line all your rods, would you not accomplish the same thing (and maybe be more comfortable) fishing a "slower" or mid-flex" rod? It seems to me that the "feeling" is the same. No? Gregg

Hey guys, Our season for stripers finally has begun over the past 3 weeks. Landlocked stripers are great sport but MUCH harder to pattern then their breathren in salt water. Just curious to know if any SOL'ers have ever tried for these "trapped" linesiders.....thought I would include a few pix of a trip I had yesterday. Fish are eating 1 1/2"-2" long threadfin shad.......

I was at a local fly shop yesterday and got to talking with the owner. He pointed me in the direction of a 2 handed rod since John Klemm reccomended them to me at the symposium. I started casting the TFO professional 12'6 8wt in the back lot and felt more at home with a two handed rod than the traditional one handed. Keep in mind that I havent used a fly rod since the early 90s and nothing ...

What is the strongest wind you can cast efectively in with a 9wt? I spent a few days hitting my self in the back of the head, legs, back, and arms trying to cast with a 15 to 20 mph cross wind, with gusts a little higher. Casting into it wasn't happening either.

Just recently I was going through some of my fly gear in the basement when my wife walked in and she commented that she would like to learn to flycast. For Christmas I am planning on possibly buying a casting lesson for her. Even though I cast pretty good I will still take a lesson with her to brush up. I would rather have a much more experinaced fly instructor train her to avoid bad ...
