"don't call it ER"
Published (2009-11-29 11:30:00)
I generally do correct the students, not because I care that much, mainly because they may run into someone down the road who does care. Better to get a slap on the wrist from me than to drop and "ER" at an interview and not get ranked. I do get a little annoyed when the consultants say ignorant things. I frequently get asked if I'm the guy "on call." No, I'm not sitting at home waiting for the...

Great! Thanks for the input. I put these into a list in case anyone else is curious about which places will help our budgets a little bit during this process (and I'm a little neurotic and like lists). EM and Kaiser
Published (2009-11-22 20:30:00)
25 days a year? Thanks for the input! I didn't know it was possible to do EM parttime. How flexible is Kaiser in letting physicians do that? Why did your friend decide to go down that route?

"don't call it ER"

I am a proponent of encouraging the use of ED and EM, as those terms reflect the maturation of the specialty over the last thirty years, but I understand that ER is ingrained in most peoples' minds. I have had many attendings and other inviewers use ER during residency interviews. I think those who get all worked up about one letter take themselves way too seriously.

That's almost as fun as having the paranoid schizo who thinks that the aliens are coming for him in the lobby when the movie alien came on . There was another paranoid one who was convince that the cops were filled with daemons coming for his soul, there just so happened an injured officer in the next bed an subsequently 20 or so cops coming in and out, hilarious!

Let me start by saying I am not sure what the right answer is here. I am an EM intern. But as I was reading this it struck me that there are still some 2-4 EM programs out there I think, meaning, they require a TY somewhere - maybe your IM intern year would qualify for this.
Tough situation - good luck.

We do it all the time, for us at least it comes down to PEA vs. Pulseless. The leads are always getting knocked off in a code and everyone is so jacked its hard to feel a pulse sometimes.
If you could do a quick EF I guess you could use it as a more sophisticated surrogate for measuring a pulse and deciding when to stop compressions.
But I've been at this for 6 months and don't know what ...

I think the best thing to do is to identify a program in a geographic location you are interested in moving to, and then find a program in that area that has the characteristics you desire in a residency. For example, the med school I attend is on the east coast but I would like to do residency on the west coast. I then chose a program with a strong reputation that offers a different patient ...

A friend of mine got an invitation today to interview for psych.
Crazy!
I'm curious to know from which programs you think the first invitations will come.

At my hospitals when we call a code STEMI several things happen:
-A specific interventional cardiologist is called regardless of the patient's insurance (ie. we don't call a contracted cards group for an HMO patient) or their private cardiologist. This is done to save time.
-The cath lab team is mobilized.
-Lab, Xray and EKG respond to the bedside.
We don't roll the patient to the lab...
