Jiffy Lube scam

if I'm changing my own oil, it's almost certainly going to run over by several thousand miles. I will occassionally inspect the underside of the Explorer just to see how it's doing. And mostly because it's always gratifying when I'm so used to seeing rust or shit not assembled/not working.

Geely to purchase Volvo

While I admittedly never owned a Volvo, I've liked most of their vehicles. The smart move would be for Geely to continue to hold the company's safety reputation, but I wonder if they will. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34571583/ns/business-autos/

Some noob brake questions

Winter Tires

VERY happy with the WS60s so far. I've been running just behind or in the storm the whole way, subjecting them to every kind of winter weather, and they're just rocking on. More review later.

Winter Tires
Published (2009-12-26 10:12:00)
I'd love to get some winter tires for the crown vic, but would first want to get some wheels so I wouldn't have to take it into the shop every time I wanted to swap. There are thousands of old police interceptors out there, so I'm certain there is a junkyard around that has some old steel wheels for "cheap" (e.g. $25-30 a pop), but I have yet to find that junkyard. Any recommendations for the DSM area?

you can get a decent multimeter for $20 at a hardware store which will be handy around the home, car, computer stuff, etc.

Winter Tires

I don't really notice my Blizzak revos being ultra squirmy on dry pavement, but that's probably because they're kinda worn out and I have a reasonably light car. Russ -- one thing to watch out for now that you have a car with tires that actually have a contact patch bigger than a bike tire... The softer tread compound tramlines like a motherfucker. The first time I got on the interstate with them I thought I was about to lose a...

Jiffy Lube scam
Published (2009-12-24 02:23:00)
I don't go to places like jiffy lube unless I'm in a huge hurry and it needs to be done. I go to my small town Iowa mechanic, or as I did when I moved to Texas, I asked a few people who'd been living there for some time. As far as changing my own oil, no way Jose. I'm more likely to screw something up than they are. Plus, my dad always taught me to spend my time learning the skills necessary to make enough money to pay...

I know there are red light cameras in various spots in Council Bluffs and yes you get a ticket in the mail with a photo of your car violating the speed or red light laws. I don't know about Omaha though. At night time if you sit at these intersections, as the light turns red, if people blow the light, it looks like a discotheque because the cameras have flashes on them and they are really ...

I like blizzaks all around. I've had various types and they are superior to the generic brands I've had on cars. I run Winterforce truck tires on the trucks though and they are the best for plowing through snow. The Blizzaks are the best ice tires for city driving.

5mm of brake material is OK for another 15k miles probably. 1mm of rear brake drum material probably needs attention. Don't you drive a BMW Z6 or something? If so does it even have drum brakes?? In any case, if your brakes aren't pulsating when you stop, it means your rotors and drums are probably not warped, so you can get away with just replacing the brake pads and brake shoes. In some ...
