What is the Marina Barrage for? Please ask MM Lee. During the Nov, Dec and Jan monsoon period, please release the water in the Marina Bay into the sea. All rivers and canals leading to the Marina Bay should have water level kept down to rock bottom at all times. When there is a heavy downpour in the Bukit Timah areas, the rivers and canals with water l;evel at its lowest will be able to cope with the deluge. This is planning ahead.

There are the good and there are the bad, but in all, the good ones outnumber the bad ones. Just as there are good, efficient citizen employees, and there are dumb, lazy ones as well. It has always been said the employer-employee deserves each other. Some of the comments made here are rather unfair to the FDWs, but then again, these commenters might have had very bad experience. However, do stop to think, these girls could also have been...

Hi, This year's top PSLE student was from China. She came here 4 years ago and yet could master the English so fast, solid leh! Singaporeans can choose not to become bilinguists but 过江龙(dragons from the China) seem to think otherwise!

Parents who think that their kids are strong in CL would be unpleasantly surprised that the standard of HCL at O-level has be raised, going by recent years' results. Teachers have blamed it on the markers who are CL teachers imported from China as our standard of CL is nowhere near the First Language. Parents have blamed it on the large numbers of Chinese nationals taking the same exam doing well, thus raising the standard. Whatever it...

Sug p5/#7 ~ Your reasoning sounds a little wonky (not just to me?) but not to you? I don't know that he came across as regretting bilingual education per se, so much as regretting the MANNER of initial implementation with UNREALISTIC expectations and methods. Call me dense but I don't get how you associate his latter-day regret/'confession' with sentiments like, ' I was wrong for being too kind-hearted'. Is there...

In the case of the Chinese language, the problem of differentiating a language from a dialect is complex, and is still being debated. The Wiki link on the subject 'Varieties of Chinese' is more pertinent than the general discussion of dialects cited above by heretiquely. A few posters have taken exception to my calling Mandarin a foreign language (more correctly a foreign speech) from the standpoint of one whose mother tongue is one...

essyessy 'The average Singaporean is better off because of Mandarin. Singaporeans should be grateful to the vision of LKY.' Like? Like losing their roots and heritage. Like the older folks being unable to communicate with their grand children. Like having their educational opportunities truncated as they are unable to pass Mandarin, even if they scored in all other subjects. Like the parents having to spend their life savings and...

Fact is, the brain drain caused by the english-educated is a cause for concern for this tiny country, hence the need to have some small changes.

<< It would be most regrettable if after another few decades, the Government admits its mistakes on these policies. >>
By that time, the Minister(s) and the civil servants responsible would have retired comfortably with their fat salaries and pension schemes.
The ones who really suffered and paid a high price for short-sighted polices are ordinary Singaporeans.
