Or is there really something else going on? I am about 30 lbs. overweight. My weight effects pretty much every aspect of my life. I have zero self confidence, walk with my head down and I havent had a date in 3 years. I want to lose weight, but I cant stop eating. What is it that compels me to keep eating even when I desperately want to lose weight? Are fat people just kidding ...

I'd like to keep this as objective as possible, so if you have a major problem with what somebody posts please take it to G.D. or the Pit. I'm curious why people are voting for whoever they're voting for this election. I'm voting for Obama. My Big Three are: 1- An end to the war in Iraq 2- A firm commitment to independence from foreign oil (which I have no illusions can be ...

This weekend, I took an express bus (about an hour trip) from Tacoma to Seattle. The bus was full so many people ended up standing for the entire trip. I offered to several women to stand up so they could sit down, but they all said "I'm fine". I noticed this had happened several times in the past few years too. Am I the only person this happens to? And if not, why won't women take an offer...

This year I have been assigned to teach two sections of Algebra II. In one of these sections, I also have 3 Algebra II Honors students. Being fairly new to teaching (this is only my third year) and totally new to having two complete levels within one class, I am mostly at a loss as to what to do. I want to do everything in my power ( within reason, of course) to make sure that each student ...

Hey, y'all. For starters (because, as you will soon see, it's relevant): As some of you for whom I register on your radar might know, I'm a Jew of (mostly) African-American descent. So, my university has a two-year language requirement, and since I'm not prepared to take on the second full year of French, I've decident to take Yiddish. That's the practical reason. The other reason ...

So i'm going to Chicago this weekend. I'm working in St. Louis and will be driving up Friday 9/5 and driving back down to St. Louis on Sunday 9/7. I can get a hotel (marriott), but I don't know where would be good. I plan to... 1) Eat pizza. 2) Watch a spoken word show because I hear it's good in Chicaco. (never been to one, recommendations welcome). 3) Visit the ...

It seems that the Northern California "green" culture is rather different than the L.A.-based Southern California lifestyle. Where would the dividing line between the two be located? Are their outlying islands of either culture? And are there other geographically identifiable cultures in California?

I need What You See is What You Get web publishing software. I don't code HTML, and don't have the inclination to learn. In the past, I have used Microsoft Frontpage, which worked fine for my minimal needs (my needs being posting a personal website on my university server containing contact info, info about my research and links to published papers, and course syllabi). Frontpage is no ...

This question occurred to me this weekend as we were leaving a family party up in northern WI. My aunt and uncle live in a fairly remote area; the closest "town" has little more than a post office and no visible commerce. It's about 16 miles to the nearest town that has stores. If I'd thought of this when we were still there, I'd have asked if there are any gas stations or such closer. I ...

I moved to the Chicago area for a new job 3 months ago, but made the unfortunate decision to rent an apartment in Buffalo Grove. This suburb seems to have NOTHING for a single 31-year-old man such as myself. Is my assessment accurate, or is there anything for young singles to do in these suburbs? It's getting pretty lonely and depressing living here. The Cubs were a source of happiness, but ...

You probably spend too much time with another language if you, as a non native speaker, are getting annoyed with words and phrases native speakers use. So I want you dopers to 1) agree with me and tell me that I am right to be annoyed with these things, and 2) explain why these expressions are used by dumb folks, and 3) don't - which must be tempting - point out spelling or grammatical ...

I have no name, at least not to my new grandson (almost 4 months old). I hate, hate, hate "Grandmother"--for crying out loud, I'm only 41 (yes, I had Hallgirl2 VERY young) and am not any visual related to a grandmother--and do not like any of the "country bumpkin" derivities, like Mamaw, Grammy, Gramma, or Nana. In the mean time, Hallgirl2 and NewBaby are here for another two weeks and I'm...

I am trepidacious about this, but I'm hoping for answers to a short poll, without renewed debate and re-dead-horse-beatization of this topic. For female Dopers: Do you prefer cut or uncut? (Elaborate if you wish) For male Dopers: 1. Cut or uncut? 2. If you could, would you change the choice your parents (or whoever was responsible) made about this? 3. Why/why not, one ...

Humble opinions sought. Below is a brief timeline written in an annoying 'boy meets girl' voice. Saturday: Boy sees advert posted by girl looking for Mr Right on Craigslist-style local site. Boy sends email to girl (attaching picture as requested) as girl sounds like good match to boy. Saturday night: Girl replies to boy's reply, saying that boy intrigues her and that she wants to ...

I see that you're up to Andrew Jackson in the presidential dollar coin roll-out. Are these things catching on? People using them much in everyday life, or an interesting curiosity that you see very now and then, or are they just for collectors?

Yes, as a matter of fact I was inspired by this thread. I don't float. My wife thinks everyone floats. I honestly do not float. If I need to stay alive I need to keep moving; lying on my back and simply floating is not an option. [ Howie Mandel] So. Float, or no float? [/HM]

My son just turned 16 and got a learner's permit. I'm the designated teacher-no way Ms. Plan B is going anywhere near this one. Any suggestions?

Like the thread title says. Will McCain's choice of Governor Palin have any effect one way or the other on how you vote in November? If your answer is yes, will the choice be decisive . My suspicion is that she won't change a single vote. I know this board isn't the greatest place to get a fair sample but let's try it anyway. Give a yes or no, then feel free to expand if you feel like it....

Which hand do you press the Shift key with, and are you right or left-handed? I'm right-handed, and I press with my right hand.
