It seems likeliest to me that it was present at the last endoscopy but did not seem significant. Here is the information that iVillage has about hiatal hernia. http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/hiatal-hernia.html?pageNum=1#1 It does seem that heavy lifting can be a risk factor, or at least can aggravate an already existing hernia. I think that is something you would need to discuss with your doctor. ?

Thank you for all of the information.? I am switching doctors on Monday.? I would have done it today if my primary care doctor's office wasn't closed for the holiday.? I should have done it after the first appointment when it didn't feel right.

A hiatal hernia means that the stomach (the part of the digestive tract normally in the abdomen and connected to the esophagus proximally and the small intestine distally) can be partially seen in the chest. This is a common finding even in patients without gastrointestinal symptoms. Small ones may come and go spontaneously. It is important to know the size of the hernia. Small to medium sized hiatal hernias are common and usually...

I just came back from my endoscopy. The Dr. said that he found no food in my gut (Thank God), he found some water, and he found a small hiatus hernia . This last part bothers me. I had an endoscopy in January, and there was never a mention made of a hiatus/hiatial hernia. Could it be that it's so small that the first doctor bothered not to mention it. Or can it be that I've developed it since then? How could I have developed it...

I recommend that you see a new specialist. It is important to select a doctor who starts out taking a good history of your medical problem and does a thorough exam. By the end of the visit, the doctor should have a list of possible diagnoses and a plan for how they will make the diagnosis. If your doctor has not done this then it is time to seek a new physician. Your primary care doctor can ...

I would avoid the sugerless gums as artificial sweeteners can cause diarrhea and other g-i symptoms in susceptible people. The sugar in gum is pretty quickly gone anyway, I believe. I have always liked peppermint flavored gums for digestive issues. I cannot recommend a specific brand.

Sorry for the delayed answer. I guess by now your mom has had her ultrasound. Do you know what it showed? I think it is possible for stones to cause an attack and then pass. Eating high fat foods is definitely a trigger for gall bladder problems and if she is eating fast food it is almost guaranteed to be high fat! I hope she gets an answer soon.

The doctor may feel that anxiety is part of your g-i problems, which is possible. Or there may be some off-label action of Lexapro that I am not aware of.

I am afraid I have no idea what this could be. If his doctor cannot come up with a diagnosis I would think a second opinion might be in order. Perhaps someone at a major medical center.

I am sorry, but I do not feel qualified to answer that question and I doubt anyone else here is either. I would suggest you speak with the doctors who recommended those drugs, tell them that both have been suggested, ask for pros and cons and go from there.

Hi Robin and welcome to the board. Don't worry about graphic descriptions -- how else can we know what is going on? While constipation usually involves a harder BM than normal, it does sound like your problem could be constipation. How long was it since your last BM? From several times a day up to every 3 days is considered normal, but most important is what is usual for you. Most of us ...

The first thing that you need to ask your doctor is whether a 4 hour gastric emptying test was done. You will probably know because you would have had to stay at the testing site for a least 4 hours. Recent studies suggest that the 4 hour test is more accurate for measuring gastric emptying. It is also important to make sure that you are not taking medications to cause a delay in the stomach ...
